BIOL 112 2021W1 Section 104 Term Project This Project is weighted as 5% of your BIOL 112 Grade. All projects are due by Monday, Nov 22 nd by 9 am. *See below for rules on policy for late submissions The BIOL 112 Project will provide an opportunity for students to explore Biol 112 course topic(s) in depth and show their conceptual understanding in new and different ways. Project Guidelines Can be completed individually, in pairs, or groups of 3. Request for groups >3 need prior permission and must include evidence that the idea/project requires effort for >3 students. The submission can be in any different forms of media (i.e. papers, videos, slide presentations, worksheets, activities). These must be original work you have created for the project (not just a link to an existing video). All submissions will be uploaded into Canvas as framework document . For example, links to files, online media, and such should be included in the framework document. The project topic must pertain to BIOL 112 Learning Objectives from Unit 2 or Unit 3. Must be unique (i.e. cannot replicate BIOL 112 materials such as activities, videos, practice problems, slides, or other materials available on the web). The project is expected to take a minimum of 4- 8 hours to complete. Framework Document Your submission must include a framework that outlines your project, the focus, the relationship to Biol 112 content and link to the final product (paper, video, etc.). Include a creative title/name for your project. Include your name and student number as well as any partners in the project. Identify your Project Focus (see below for Project Focus Ideas). Link the project content with BIOL 112 content by providing which learning objectives were used (see L.O.s in student google folder). You do not have to include ALL the LO’s from any one topic (for example, Unit 3-2). Outline the specific components of the project (i.e. in addition to this framework, is there a video, activity, files, links, etc.). In a short paragraph (no more than a half of a page), describe your project to the reader. Provide a purpose and guide the reader through the elements of your project and if applicable, what to do/view and in what order.
BIOL 112 2021W1 Section 104 Term Project Your project may contain more than one component. List the components of the project (for example, Video on “X”, Activity on “Y”, paper of “Z”). If there is only one component, list it anyway. In a short paragraph (no more than a half of a page) reflect on what you learned for this project. Did the project enhance and deepen your understanding of a topic(s) in the course? Did the project expand your knowledge of science and ways to think about the material? Explain. Include a page with scholarly and popular references. Project Focus Choose one of these areas for your project focus. If you have your own great idea, please consult with your instructor before you proceed. 1. Teach a concept Teach others a topic/concept in BIOL 112. Use any form of media to teach a concept (e.g., videos -any platform, software, etc.) in 10 -15 minutes. Be sure to include how you will assess learning (i.e. how will you know)? Link to the Learning objectives. 2. Create content for BIOL 112 Create an activity/worksheet of a BIOL 112 concept. The activity/worksheet should be unique (not based on anything already used in BIOL 112) and includes a student version and answer key version. Be sure to include the relevant learning objectives. 3. Flowchart and Concept Mapping Pick two topic modules and show how these topics and concepts are integrated with each other. You can use more than one flowchart (less detailed to more detailed) to demonstrate your understanding and integration of concepts. Be aware that this project requires a deep understanding and should demonstrate significant detail. Maps that provide only an overview will not receive full marks. 4. Study tool Create a study tool for BIOL 112 students to prepare for exams. The study tool can be any form of media but should include questions, answers, guiding student to appropriate resources for further information.

This is a process that acknowledges there are different ways of knowing outside mainstream knowledge that is primarily taught at universities. Your comparison can be chosen from any cultural approach to learning, interpreting science e.g. (but not limited to this example) comparing Western knowledge structures to Indigenous ways of knowing. 6. Silent Genomes Project https://learningcircle.ubc.ca/2020/09/15/silent-genome-project-92520/ Data from reference databases that are used for genomic diagnosis are lacking data from persons who are identify as indigenous (see video). This project will explore how genome databases are created, the usefulness and limitations. Draw from your BIOL 112 content on genomes and genes to explain how these databases are created and used. How are the databases used to diagnosis diseases? What are some efforts to address the gap in the databanks? In addition to the social issues, from a cell biology perspective. The project should explain (but not limited to) the science behind genomes, genes, variation between genes, sequence analysis, how is DNA collected and added to the databases. 7. Present an idea for a project You can present your own idea but be sure to obtain permission from the Instructor FIRST!

BIOL 112 2021W1 Section 104 Term Project How the Project is Graded: This project is worth 5% of your BIOL 112 Grade The project will be assessed by the following 5 component weighted 1% each. 0, 0.5 or 1 point: Content demonstrates a deep level of understanding of the topic/concept. Content links directly to BIOL 112 learning objectives and topics. Framework Document contains all mandatory elements, demonstrates the logic in the design and plan. Creativity, originality. Does not replicate content that already exists. Production, effort. Assessment of quality of work and initiative. Project authors are clearly engaged in the topic.
