EPSC 181 — Introduction to the Human-Earth System — Winter 2023
Assignment 4 Human activities and energy use Please enter your answers in a new document with your name on it (preferably typed, but handwritten and photographed is also fine, as long as it is legible!). Drawings can be done by hand or using software. Upload your completed assignment with your name on it
in
pdf format
to myCourses. Due:
Monday March 6 at 1 pm. No late assignments will be accepted. Part 1: The EPSC 181 Student Day! (7 pts) This part requires that you complete a Time Use Diary for one entire day. You can choose any day of the week you want, but make sure it is a real, continuous day (no combining parts of di
ff
erent days!). You will do this by making an anonymous copy of a spreadsheet, filling this out, and then submitting it anonymously.
Please start with the google spreadsheet located here
Make your own copy to fill out:
-
go to ‘File’ \ ‘Make a Copy’ and then click ‘OK’ (ignore the options). -
Please do not
rename the file or put your name anywhere on the sheet (so that it stays anonymous).
Indicate whether the day you are recording is a weekend /holiday by entering YES or NO in the box at the top.
As best you can, go through each 30 minute time slot and fill in the Activity column with the numbered codes (from 1 to 18) shown on the right side of the sheet that best reflects what you did most of the time, as a primary activity. See page 4 of the assignment for descriptions of the activities. At the same time, fill in the corresponding experience code that best reflects your general emotional response to each activity (from 1 to 5).
Next, use the METs in the standard activity compendium (attached) to assign an approximate MET to each activity.
a)
What challenges did you encounter in assigning activities and experiences?
b)
What was your average MET for the day? How accurate would you say this is? (+/- range)
You don’t need to hand your sheet in directly - but instead, please contribute to citizen science! Page of 1
4
To do this, in your completed, anonymous sheet,
1.
go to Share
2.
Under ‘Get link’, click on ‘Change to anyone with the link’, and then click ‘Copy link’, and paste it anonymously here.
The results will be anonymously compiled and presented in class as an average and overall distribution.
Part 2: Global food production (4 pts) The average time spent on food growth on collection, averaged across all humans (i.e. in the global human day), is 0.8h person
-1
day
-1
.
a) Estimate the total daily rate of somatic energy (in J per day) that is currently invested - globally, by all persons - in this activity. Assume an average total MET for this activity of 4, an energy consumption of 1.1 W kg
-1
per MET, and average human mass of 50 kg. b) Assume each person in the global population consumes 10 MJ of food energy per day, which represents the total energy provided by all food growth and collection. What is the ratio between this total food energy provided to all humans and the food energy consumed in order to do the agricultural activity in part (a)? (In other words, how many joules of food energy are provided for every joule of somatic energy invested?)
Part 3: Accelerating travel (7 pts) The global human day shows that people travel, on average, for about 1 h per day. Remarkably, this does not vary with di
ff
erences in the wealth of a country, or the mode of transport.
Assume that the distance x
traveled by people during a day can be described by the equation
where A
x
is the average time spent traveling (in s), P
x
is the rate of energy consumption (in W), and ε
x
is the energy e
ffi
ciency of travel. Here the energy e
ffi
ciency ε
x is in terms of how far the person travels for a given amount if energy, in units of km MJ
-1
.
a)
if a person of mass 50 kg walks for a distance of x
= 5 km in 1 h every day, at an average P
x
of 3 METs, how much somatic energy do they expend (in MJ)? Use this to calculate ε
x
. (You will probably want to rearrange the equation first, to solve for ε
x
)

b)
if that person instead drives a single-occupancy car for 1 h per day, using 10 L of gasoline to travel 100 km, how many MJ are used? What is ε
x
? How does this compare to the energy e
ffi
ciency of walking, per distance? (For gasoline, assume the energy density is 35 MJ L
-1
.)
c)
If we now think of energy use per unit time (e.g. in W, or J h
-1
), rather than per unit distance what is the ratio of driving to walking in terms of the rate at which energy is used? Say a few words about the comparisons.
d)
Now consider a car-oriented city that wants to reduce its energy use to combat climate change. Given the fact that the total travel time is constant at about 1h per day, regardless of travel speed, would it be more e
ff
ective for the city to build a light rapid transit system that has an e
ffi
ciency of travel of 1 km /MJ, or for the city to regulate development in order to encourage citizens to spend more time walking? Justify your answer with reference to your answers in parts a, b and c. Part 4: Accelerating material extraction (4 pts)
Globally, fossil fuels are extracted from the lithosphere at a rate of roughly 10 Pg C y
-1
. This fuel is then used to power the technosphere. Use the equation where F is the amount of fossil fuel that has been extracted, A
F
is the time spent on the extraction activity, N is the global human population, and ε
F
is a contextual variable that represents the average e
ffi
ciency of the extraction activity per person. In other words, ε
F
is a measure of how much fossil fuel each person working in extraction is able to extract from the lithosphere, per day.
a) Knowing that the average human day includes a total A
F
= 1 minute per person per day, what is ε
F
? Give your answer in units of tonnes of C (person)
-1
(year)
-1
. b) Briefly explain what the value of ε
F
might depend on, and how it is likely to have changed over history.
