2 5-1 Final Project Milestone Three: Coursework and Concentration I would like to preface this paper by saying everything I thought was for me with regard to my academic concentration has been all incorrect. "To succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions." ~ Benjamin Franklin. This quote by well known Benjamin Franklin is me in a nutshell, or at least me before spending two hours with my appointed advisor. After spending the much-needed quality time with my advisor, and actually reviewing all of my previous course work, I have changed my concentration and made it official with the Registrars office. The concentration that I have chosen is the Exploring STEM (BA.GST.EST) program. This concentration was decided by both my advisor and me after having an in-depth discussion on previous coursework completed and where I see my future career goals. Up until this point in the course I was looking at the Leadership Essentials concentration but realized that concentration would limit my window of opportunity to specific professional fields. Although I am currently in a leadership role, the role is still based in healthcare. Choosing STEM as my concentration allowed me to apply a few previous courses taken in science and technology toward my graduation requirement. The Exploring STEM program will allow me to expand on the knowledge I already have and encourage me to continue on with a graduate degree, which I had not previously considered. Southern New Hampshire University has allowed me to transfer in one hundred and twenty credits, from my previously attended institutions. My advisor petitioned to have two electives transfer into my program graduation requirement, leaving me to complete the following five classes: HIS-100 Perspectives in History, HUM-200 Applied Humanities, BIO-315 Ecological Principles/Methods, ENV-101 Environmental Science, and HUM-100 Perspectives in the Humanities. Of the above-listed courses, most will be taken in
3 twos except for BIO-315. I chose to take BIO-315 alone because it is a higher-level science course and will most likely require more critical thinking. The listed one hundred and two hundred level courses will fulfill my elective requirement needed, with only one course requiring a one hundred level prerequisite. My three hundred level course is the only other course required for the Exploring STEM concentration. I am excited about this concentration for two reasons, one being the classes needed are not many and the other being, hopefully they will not require long research papers. Although I have the knowledge to complete research papers as needed, I just don’t have much time. Below I have attached a table with my completed coursework and my need to complete coursework. For term 24EW3, I will only challenge one course, BIO-315 which explores theoretical topics in the ecological systems including the level of the
6 population, community and ecosystem; energy flow and biogeochemical cycles; and the concept of sustainability. This course I feel may be more challenging because the description says we will read literature and conduct research projects in the field and will use critical thinking to evaluate research, design studies, present findings and debate on the issues. My final term 24EW4 I will take two courses again, HIS-100 which examines the process of investigating and writing about history through analysis of sources and the presentation of this analysis as an argument, and HUM-200 which is a course that allows the student the opportunity to select works, collections, or periods within the humanities for research and study.
