Imagine you are a Microbiologist who leads a committee of stakeholders (scientists, engineers, farmers, miners, GBC students and faculty) who provide expertise in infectious diseases to the government of Ontario. Your group have already met to discuss emergency preparedness and outbreak response to infectious diseases. In particular, you were concerned with lab responses for human bacterial threats such as: o antimicrobial resistant organisms  o vaccine preventable bacterial diseases o rare and emerging bacterial organisms o tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria o bacterial sexually transmitted infections, such as gonorrhea o biological security responses to potential acts of bio- terrorism Since the government is working in its next budget, it has asked for your expert opinion on these issues. Here is your task: To prepare a report describing pathogens and their potential threat to public health. Disease caused by the bacterium: Typhoid Fever 3. Typhoid fever is just like flu-illness characterized by symptoms like high fever, headache, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, dry cough, and loss of appetite. In a few cases, it can also lead to complications affecting various organs, which needs treatment or otherwise it can be fatal. 2
4. Typhoid fever is spread through the consumption of food or water contaminated with the stool or urine of an infected person. Inadequate handwashing habits, poor sanitation and contaminated water supply contribute to the transmission. Direct contact and sometimes, transmission through anal-oral sex can also occur. 5. Yes, the bacteria “Salmonella” has developed antibiotic resistance. Resistance is common and increasing, especially in regions where typhoid fever is prevalent.
