Case Study: A New Pesticide Cocktail Please refer to your textbook, pg 153 and 154 – Case Study: A New Pesticide Cocktail. Once you have reviewed the information, please answer the questions below: 1. Why would croplands that consist of corn and soybean plants be a prime location for pest (insect and plant) invasion? Because corn and soybeans grow very quickly, and the farmers grow the largest crops making this environment awesome for insect pests. 2. What happens with species that live in an ecosystem where there is constant disruption? Competition for the resources within the ecosystem intensifies. There may be a decline in population sizes; species that adapt successfully will procreate more and flourish. Continuous disruption encourages a species' evolution. 3. What has been the agricultural impact of the “seed systems” that were introduced by Bayer- Monsanto and Dow AgroSciences since the early 1990’s? What has been the cost trend? Using these seed methods has both advantages and disadvantages. One benefit is that farmers can heavily apply herbicides to their crops without endangering them. On the other hand, the drawback is that these pests' populations will probably develop and be able to persist rather than going extinct. Due to increased production and profitability for farmers, which raises the cost of licenses and chemicals/seeds, the cost trend has increased dramatically over time. 4. What is the “pesticide treadmill”? The rapid evolution of pests and weeds which results in the constant need for better pesticide 5. Do you agree with the author’s assertion that as more of the population moves to the city, it becomes harder for people to understand the complexity of the agricultural production system? Why or why not? Yes, because those who do not reside in an agricultural area are unable to witness the processes involved in farming. It would be difficult to comprehend the intricacy of the system if fewer people were in close proximity to it. 6. What has been the trend between 1992 – 2014 regarding the amount of soybean and corn crop use? What is the reason for that trend? The reason for this trend is due to the decrease in pesticides use that was a result of pes evolution the pests may have become resistant to the new pesticides
7. Do you believe that the use of pesticides/herbicides is justified moving forward? Why or why not? No, because it's unsafe for humans to ingest chemicals sprayed on the crops. People should ingest organic foods that do not use any chemicals or pesticides for their crops.
