Exercise 2 – Organ Systems Overview
Name
_Islande Similien____________
Instructions and Review Sheet
Once you have completed the below activities, please answer the questions on the following pages and submit this completed document to me in Canvas. You must have a copy of the lab manual to complete this exercise. Please read the entire exercise in your lab manual. Pay particular attention to the figures – the practical portion of the exam will use images and figures taken from the lab manual and handouts like
this one.
Activities 1-4: In class we do a quick dissection of a rat to become familiarized with the basic mammalian
organ systems – although they are shaped a bit differently in a human and a rat, they are broadly similar. I regret that you cannot do the dissection (you may not!) but you can learn the basic anatomy by
carefully reading your lab manual and studying the figures. Please also watch this short video demonstration of a rat dissection:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2RSX2QNp64
Activity 5: Study the figure and identify the location of the listed structures.
Assign all the structures listed above to one of the following organ system categories.
Digestive: stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, rectum, mesentery
Urinary: kidney, ureter, bladder
Cardiovascular: heart, descending aorta, inferior vena cava
Endocrine: thyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas
Reproductive: uterus
Respiratory: lungs, bronchi, trachea
Lymphatic: spleen
Nervous: brain, spinal cord
