Exercise 2 – Organ Systems Overview Name _Islande Similien____________ Instructions and Review Sheet Once you have completed the below activities, please answer the questions on the following pages and submit this completed document to me in Canvas. You must have a copy of the lab manual to complete this exercise. Please read the entire exercise in your lab manual. Pay particular attention to the figures – the practical portion of the exam will use images and figures taken from the lab manual and handouts like this one. Activities 1-4: In class we do a quick dissection of a rat to become familiarized with the basic mammalian organ systems – although they are shaped a bit differently in a human and a rat, they are broadly similar. I regret that you cannot do the dissection (you may not!) but you can learn the basic anatomy by carefully reading your lab manual and studying the figures. Please also watch this short video demonstration of a rat dissection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2RSX2QNp64 Activity 5: Study the figure and identify the location of the listed structures. Assign all the structures listed above to one of the following organ system categories. Digestive: stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, rectum, mesentery Urinary: kidney, ureter, bladder Cardiovascular: heart, descending aorta, inferior vena cava Endocrine: thyroid gland, adrenal gland, pancreas Reproductive: uterus Respiratory: lungs, bronchi, trachea Lymphatic: spleen Nervous: brain, spinal cord Organ System Overview 1. Use the key below to indicate the body systems that perform the following functions for the body; note that some responses are used more than once. Key: a. cardiovascular d. integumentary g. nervous j. skeletal b. digestive e. lymphatic/immunity h. reproductive k. urinary c. endocrine f. muscular i. respiratory _k___ 1. rids the body of nitrogen-containing wastes _c__ 2. is affected by removal of the thyroid gland
__J__ 3. provides support and the levers on which the muscular system acts __a__ 4. includes the heart __h__ 5. has a menstrual cycle in females ___d_ 6. protects underlying organs from drying out and from mechanical damage __e__ 7. protects the body; destroys bacteria and tumor cells __b__ 8. breaks down ingested food into its building blocks _i___ 9. removes carbon dioxide from the blood __a__ 10. delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissues __f__ 11. moves the limbs; facilitates facial expression __k__ 12. conserves body water or eliminates excesses __h__ 13. facilitates conception and childbearing __c__ 14. controls the body by means of hormones ___d_ 15. is damaged when you cut your finger or get a severe sunburn 2. Using the above key, choose the organ system to which each of the following sets of organs or body structures belongs. ___e_ 1. thymus, spleen, lymphatic vessels ___J_ 2. bones, cartilages, tendons __c__ 3. pancreas, pituitary gland, adrenal glands ___i_ 4. trachea, bronchi, lungs _d___ 5. epidermis, dermis, and cutaneous sense organs __h__ 6. testis, ductus deferens, urethra _b___ 7. esophagus, large intestine, rectum _f___ 8. muscles of thigh, postural muscles 3. Using the key, place the following organs in their proper body cavity. Some responses may be used more than once. Key: a. abdominopelvic b. cranial c. spinal d. thoracic __a__ 1. stomach _d___ 2. esophagus __a__ 3. large intestine __a__ 4. liver _c___ 5. spinal cord _a___ 6. urinary bladder _d___ 7. heart ___d_ 8. trachea ____ 9. rectum 4. Using the organs listed in question 3 above, record, by number, which would be found in the abdominopelvic regions listed below. __6__ 1. hypogastric region __1__ 2. right lumbar region ___3_ 3. umbilical region __1__ 4. epigastric region __3__ 5. left iliac region __4__ 6. left hypochondriac region 5. The levels of organization of a living body include: (1) _cell__ , (2) Tissue___ , (3) _organ____ , (4) _Organ system____ , and organism. 6. Define organ .
a group of two or more different types of tissues that work together to perform a function 7. Identify which organ system is illustrated by each labeled drawing. A. Skeletal system B. Nervous system C. Circulatory system D. Respiratory System E. Digestive System f. Muscular System
