Antibiotic Use on Farms One of the reasons why antibiotics are not as effective today as they used to be is because bacteria have become more resistant. Over the years, the use of antibiotics has led bacteria to develop resistance through genetic mutations. Another reason is that some people misuse antibiotics, which limits their efficacy. For instance, failure to complete dosage or improper use. Lastly, there has been an increased development of new bacteria, which are yet to be studied. Farmers use antibiotics on their livestock to keep them healthy. Antibiotics help fight off bacteria and other types of infections that livestock may develop. Treating these infections prevents the quality of the livestock from degrading and keeps them alive. Banning the use of antibiotics could impact farmers negatively in many ways. Primarily, the productivity of the livestock would decline. In this case, the products that farmers sell from their livestock, such as meat, wool, hides, and butter, would be of lower quality. In addition, banning antibiotics could lead to a huge number of deaths among the livestock, which is a huge loss to the farmers. I think it imperative to allow farmers to use antibiotics on their livestock for some reasons and not others. They should be allowed to use them for life-threatening infections. However, if the conditions are not life-threatening, farmers should consider other options. References Kasimanickam, V., Kasimanickam, M., & Kasimanickam, R. (2021). Great post. While I agree with a majority of your post, there are some areas where I differ. For instance, you point out that farmers should be allowed to use antibiotics to treat animals. I do not entirely refute your statement. However, I think the use of antibiotics on livestock should be controlled. There should be a limitation on the types of antibiotics farmers can use. Besides, there should be a differentiation on the conditions which necessitate the use of antibiotics and which do not warrant their use ( Kasimanickam et al., 2021). Antibiotic have already displayed an increased escalation in antimicrobial resistance, which is transferred to humans when they consumer foods and other animal products.
