Unit 6: Homework Galaxy Zoo Imad Masood, I March 8, 2024 Step 1: Go the galaxy zoo website: http://www.galaxyzoo.org Step 2: Click on the classify button. Step 3: Carefully read the introductory information that pops up. Step 4 : You are required to classify ten galaxies. You will be asked a series of questions to step you through the classification process. Write a brief description of the choices you make to classify the galaxy for each galaxy . If you click on help it will give you examples of each choice to compare to the galaxy you are classifying. This is part of a citizen science project, so you are taking part in a real science project. This means I am grading this based on your description rather than right or wrong answers. Galaxy Description 1 The first central galaxy has a smooth and moderately rounded structure with minor disturbances and lacks any rare features. 2 The second central galaxy displays a smooth, cigar-shaped roundness with minor disturbances and no rare features. 3 The third central galaxy is smooth with cigar-shaped roundness, and it is merging with another galaxy, without any rare features noted. 4 The fourth galaxy has a smooth, cigar-shaped roundness with no disturbances, despite initial consideration of a ring. No rare features. 5 The fifth central galaxy is smooth with complete roundness, lacking disturbances. 6 The sixth galaxy is smooth with in-between roundness, displaying minor disturbances and no unique features. 7 The seventh galaxy is small, smooth, and cigar-shaped with no disturbances or rare features. 8 The eighth galaxy was challenging to classify, but I noted features like an edge on the disk and a bright clump. No disturbances or unique features. 9 The ninth galaxy is smooth with cigar-shaped roundness, having no disturbances or unusual features. 10 The tenth galaxy shows features with an edge-on disk, a rounded bulge, minor clumps, and minor disturbances. It appears brighter than most others. Step 5: Write a few sentences describing the most common type of galaxy in the set you classified and anything that did not fit the standard description of a galaxy as discussed in the notes. I classified galaxies that appeared smooth and lacked distinct features. Initially, I doubted my categories, I gained confidence in my answers. Although I did not come across anything that
turned from the notes, I was a bit surprised not to encounter any barred galaxies, which I was eager to identify. Step 6 : Write a paragraph outlining the difficulties you had in classifying the galaxies. Were you certain of all the choices you made? What about the galaxy that led to your indecision? As I progressed through the exercise, my skill improved with more experience and practice. A difficulty arose in determining whether a galaxy experienced major, minor, or no disturbances. The concept of disturbances remained unclear to me. Uncertainty persisted in my choices, and I still lack confidence in them.
