HUBBLECAST NEBULA ACTIVITY In this activity, you will watch four Hubblecast videos about gaseous nebula to learn more about these fascinating objects. You will answers based on the information in the videos, and connect this information with topics in the text. You will be graded on The thoroughness and clarity of your answers, Your ability to correctly identify factual information from the resources, and Your ability to critically analyze information from different sources to make analyses and predictions. Watch Hubblecast 51 1. In what constellation is Sh 2-106 found? a. Sh 2-106 is found in the constellation Cygnus. 2. What term does the Hubblecast use to describe the shape of the region? What causes this shape? a. Hubblecast describes the shape of the region as an hourglass. 3. How large is the cloud of dust in the image? a. The cloud of dust is about 2 light years in size. 4. Our text defines two common terms for the effects seen around a star in the last stages of formation, both of which are shown here (but not mentioned by name in the video). What are they? a. The star is becoming more compact and the luminosity of the star decreases. Watch Hubblecast 71 5. RS Puppis is a special type of star called a Cepheid Variable , which we will discuss in detail later. At its brightest, the star has the same surface temperature as a main sequence G star, at its dimmest, a K star. What type of nebula (discussed in the text) must the glowing area around RS Puppis be, based on these temperatures and why? a. The luminous region surrounding RS Puppis called a reflection nebula because its temperature fluctuates with the brightness of the star. In addition, the nebula surrounding the star appears blue, indicating that it is a reflection nebula. 6. How are Cepheid variables important in studying celestial objects? What special information can they give?
b. Cepheid variables are useful in researching celestial objects because they may be used as cosmic distance markers, revealing the distance of the star from our planet. Watch Hubblecast 73 ( https://www.spacetelescope.org/videos/heic1406a/ ) 7. What is the National Galactic Catalog (NGC) number, and common name of the nebula in this video? a. The nebula in this movie has the NGC number 2174 and the popular name Monkey Head Nebula. 8. How far away is the nebula? In which constellation is it found? b. This nebula is located 6,400 light years distant in the constellation Orion. 9. What process is dissipating the nebula c. The existence of young, blazing stars causes high-velocity winds to drive this nebula's gas outwards. Watch Hubblecast 82 10. What nebula is the image taken from? a. This image is taken of the Eagle Nebula. 11. Why is the new infrared image of the area useful? Explain what infrared reveals in the pillars that visible light images can not. b. The new infrared photograph of the region allows us to peer past the dust and gas and gain a new perspective on the pillars. The stars within the nebula are visible in the infrared photograph.
