Tyler Opila Homework 9 Due: 10/24 11:59 pm Reading Chapters 15, 16, 19 Questions 1. (15.5) Which aspects of the Sun’s activity cycle have a period of about 11 years? Which vary during intervals of about 22 years? The number of sunspots goes from a little to about one hundred at one time and then back to almost none in cycles ranging anywhere from 9 to 14 years. During each cycle, the north or south magnetic pole of the sunspots leads. During the next cycle, the polarity reverses. 2. (15.11) How does activity on the Sun affect human technology on Earth and in the rest of the solar system? Solar activity can affect satellite orbits, communication satellites, and power grids; It also can impact our spacecraft throughout the solar system. 3. (16.3) What is the ultimate source of energy that makes the Sun shine? The source of energy that lets the sunshine is matter that is converted into energy through the fusion of hydrogen into helium. 4. (16.17) Which of the following transformations is (are) fusion and which is (are) fission: helium to carbon, carbon to iron, uranium to lead, boron to carbon, oxygen to neon? (See Appendix K for a list of the elements.) Problems 5. (16.29) Estimate the amount of mass that is converted to energy when a proton combines with a deuterium nucleus to form 3He. 6. (19.39) What would the parallax of Luhman 16 (see Exercise 19.38) be as measured from Earth? The parallax would be 0.5 arcseconds from earth.
