According to the texts, how and why did the federal government’s role in education
change after World War II?
After World War II there continued to be struggles for students’ rights, women’s equality, and
racial injustice.
The federal government stepped in to stop inequality in schools.
Most schools
still fought to keep students separate, African American from white students and women still
were finding for equal rights.
The government stepped in when Brown verse Board education
went to the supreme court.
Ruling “polices of formal segregation in public schools were
contrary to the equal protection clause of the constitution’s 14
th
amendment right” (Rury, 2020, p.
162).
Schools became desegrated overtime and everyone would have the right to equal
educational instruction.
The government also passed the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act as part of civil rights and antipoverty legislation.
It provided funds to add those students at
poverty level to be able to attend school without worrying about the cost (Rury, 2020).
Another
group that was at a disadvantage was those who required special education.
The federal
government passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, with it “the federal
government required school districts to provide special education students with free and
appropriate education in the lease restrictive environment possible” (Rury, 2020, p. 175).
The
Federal government fought to give everyone an education no matter how much money they had,
no matter their abilities, and regardless of their race.
2.
What do you think is the proper role for government in education and schooling?
According to Friedman, when looking at schools regarding who is paying for them and
administered by is the governmental bodies.
The role which it should play in education depends
on the participating body. “The government has assumed the financial costs of providing
education” (Friedman, 2007).
It pays for not just the minimum amount but also for those who
wish to receive an education after high school.
The government is willing to pay for general
education due to that is adds economic value for the student.
It does not pay for vocational
education (Friedman, 2007).
I feel like this should be an option for those who wish to learn a
particular trade instead of advancing to college.
I am grateful for my college degree, but it did
not make it any easier to obtain a higher pay job after I graduated.
In fact, it was difficult to find
a job and I went back to what I knew how to do, taking care of people.
3.
According to the texts, how has technological advancement connected to education?
What are the pros and cons of technological change?
With anything that is new, there are advantages and disadvantages to it.
According to the article
by Postman (1998), when it comes to new technology it will benefit some and for others it will
harm them.
Some people are great when the technology advances and others struggle to
understand.
I feel like I am one of those people that every time technology changes, I struggle.
It takes me time to understand the new advancements or even new layout or design of a program.
Those that benefit the most are computer companies.
“. . . speak constantly of the Age of
Information, always implying that the more information we have, the better we will be in solving
significant problems—not only personal ones but large-scale social problems” (Postman, 1998).
This is not true. As Postman puts it you can’t solve world hunger, it doesn’t help those who are
dealing with addiction or abuse.
Technology is not able to solve everything, and it is constantly
evolving.
With the advancement in technology, it has allowed schools to be able to have online
courses, communicate through video, and even submit assignments to teachers.
