Hi everyone, my name is Jasmin Franklin. I am a grad student at Grand Canyon
University, where I’m pursuing my master’s in communication with an emphasis in higher
education. I currently teach middle school math, which is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I
have been teaching for about 2 years now and I’m very passionate about teaching and learning
new things.
In this video I will be explaining ways to effectively communicate and the different
challenges that may arise with adult learners. But before we talk about the ways to communicate,
let’s talk about what communication is. Communication is the lifeblood of relationships, work,
environments, and societal interactions (Skills you need, 2011). Its potency lies not just in words
exchanged but, in the clarity, empathy, and resonance embedded within them. A seamless
dialogue thrives on the delicate balance of speaking with purpose and listening with intent.
Whether through verbal, non-verbal, or written means, effective communication crafts bridges of
understanding, transcending barriers, and fostering connections that transcend mere exchange of
information.
Effective communication encompasses various facets, from active listening to articulating
thoughts clearly. It thrives in empathetic engagement, where understanding precedes being
understood. Clarity in expression, whether verbal or written, forms of cornerstone, while non-
verbal cues, such as body language and tone, amplify the intended message. Adaptability plays a
pivotal role, tailoring the approach to suit diverse audiences. Ultimately, fostering an
environment where communication feels safe, inclusive, and respectful is key to cultivating
meaningful and impactful interactions.
Fostering effective communication with adult learners involves considering their unique
needs and preferences (Yi, 2005). Three strategies, I would implement would be:
1.
Treating adults as partners in the learning process. Encouraging open discussions, value
their experiences, and creating a supportive environment where their contributions are
appreciated. Also acknowledging their expertise and allowing opportunities for them to
share their knowledge within the learning context.
2.
Connecting the learning material to real-life situations and their specific goals. Adults
often learn best when they see the immediate applicability of the knowledge or skills
they’re acquiring. Tailoring the content to address their needs, allowing room for
customization and application in their professional or personal lives.
3.
Recognizing that adult learners have various commitments and learning styles. Offering
flexible learning formats, such as online resources, interactive workshops, or self-paced
modules. Allowing for different approaches to learning, such as group discussions,
independent study, or hands-on activities, catering to diverse preferences and schedules.
Communication in higher education often faces challenges stemming from diverse factors.
One significant obstacle is the varying communication preferences among students, faculty,
and administrators, resulting in misunderstanding and information gaps. Additionally, the
large volume of information and the use of complex academic language might hinder
effective comprehension and engagement. To overcome these challenges, I would implement
diverse communication channels, such as online platforms, in-person discussions, and clear
written materials, can cater to different learning styles and preferences. Also, encouraging

open dialogue, providing ample opportunities for feedback, and fostering a culture of
inclusivity and understanding can bridge communication gaps and enhance the overall
education experience in higher institutions.
In conclusion, effective communication lays the foundation for student success and
cultivates a nurturing classroom atmosphere. By fostering clear, empathetic communication
channels between educators and students, an environment of trust, understanding, and
collaboration emerges. It empowers students to express themselves confidently, seek clarification
when needed, and actively engage in the learning process. This supportive environment not only
enhances academic achievement but also nurtures essential skills such as critical thinking,
collaboration, and adaptability, setting the stage for lifelong learning and success beyond the
classroom. Ultimately, effective communication is the catalyst that fuels a positive, inclusive,
and empowering classroom, where each student thrives and flourishes.
