Session 2 Chapter Summary Scottie Pritchett Colorado Christian University HUM-229A-25003-FA23. 10/15/2023
Mere Christianity is a book by the British author C. S. Lewis. The book was adapted from a series of BBC radio talks made between 1941 and 1944, originally published as three separate volumes: Broadcast Talks (1942), Christian Behavior (1943), and Beyond Personality (1944). Mere Christianity talks about Christianity offering a philosophical approach to understanding fundamental Christian doctrines. Lewis argues against atheism by pointing out the Law of Human Nature, or a universal, absolute truth. The creature is all around depending on where it produces and comes from. Next, the story Mere Christianity talks about making many things in life essential and life-changing points. One of the most important ideas he discusses is how Christianity changes how you view the world today and how it can affect your views and ideas. Mere Christianity speaks about the information and the quotes on each page. When you look deeper into understanding, you begin to realize what it means and why Lewis selected it as the basis of his writing. Then, C.S. Lewis talks about how religion has an idea of God and that we should not think of other religions as wrong but as different. He talks about how people should listen and learn from what they say. C.S Lewis's question about whether God is good or evil. He states that Pantheists believe that God is beyond good and bad, and he tells us that Christians believe that God is naturally good and never has been hurtful. We soon learn the critical difference between the Pantheists of the world as inherently good and don't believe that evil exists, but Christians differ in their beliefs and think that it is good and evil, and God wants us to make the wrong things good. Lewis strengthens his point by saying, "Christianity is a fighting religion. Also, Lewis says the critics of Christianity whenever they say it is too complicated. Lewis claps back by saying if the world is complicated, why would religion be easy? Lewis
enforces his point by saying, "Reality is usually something you could not have guessed. That is one of the reasons I believe in Christians today. It is a religion you could not have guessed. If it offered us just the kind of universe we had always expected, I should feel we were making it up" (p.43). Finally, C.S. Lewis talks about The Practical Conclusion," C.S. Lewis talks about surrendering and the things they had to do before they submit. He always says, "Christ underwent the perfect surrender and humiliation because he was God, surrender and humiliation because he was a man." C.S. Lewis noted baptism belief and were the three things that spread the Christ-life. I know the version of the Holy Communion, the Mass, and the Lord's Supper from my pastor talking about it in Sunday Church. Some Christians holler Holy Communion, the Mass, and the Lord's Supper. In conclusion, the more I learn about C.S. Lewis and his accomplishments, the more determined I am to know more about him. All his stories are amazing, and I look forward to reading more, but Mere Christianity is the best I have read. I recommend that people take this class and learn about C.S. Lewis and his work. I look forward to doing more assignments about him in the next few weeks. I can do anything I put my mind and everything to.
