MODULE 3 SHORT ANSWER
My first pick is “Marshall with Family”, from the “Kinship” exhibition at the National
Portrait Gallery, by Jessica Todd Harper, photographer.
The reason I chose this painting was because it grabbed my attention. The little boy looks
so pleased and loved. He reminds me of my boy at that age. It shows he has an extended family
to love him and make him feel secure, something I did not have for my little ones. The Grandma
is focused on him, not the new baby, so he I think gets plenty of attention.

My second choice is from “I Dream a World: Selections from Brian Lanker’s Portraits of
Remarkable Black Women (Part 11)” I chose his subject Elizabeth Catlett, because she reminded
me of me. She was a survivor and she relocated to Mexico to become a part of its art culture; she
was committed to art as a vehicle for change. Ultimately, Elizabeth was being persecuted by the
US government for her political views, so she became a citizen of Mexico.

In my first choice I believe it was probably the early 70’s, the paneling on the walls and
the globe, the style of Grandma’s clothing. Also, it was more common for grandparents to visit
when there was a new baby. The little boy’s haircut was also common during that period.
In the second one, it was during a time of political upheaval. Racial issues were the thing
and Black women were fighting for their place in our society. Many used the arts as a form of
expressing what they were trying to accomplish. There was also a massive thing about
communism.

MODULE 3 SHORT ANSWER
In the “Marshall With Family” picture, my question would be what would the decorating,
clothing and hair styles tell us about that time period, and what would the setting say about
family then.
I would go to the library microfilm of past issues of magazines that depict that time
period. I would also try to find movies or television shows based on that period. I would use key
words like decorating, fashion, and hairstyles. Also, words like family values, structure, and
traditions.
