The Odyssey Part 1: Reading Review Ques7ons Books 8-10 DIRECTIONS: Read the beginning three chapters of The Odyssey Part I: Invoca7on; Sailing from Troy; The Lotus Eaters- pages 497-500 (Books 8-10). I. Chunk the text into sec8ons and paraphrase the reading to help with understanding. Include key details. If there are unknown words/ phrases, define them. o Invoca7on – paraphrased summaries o In the Invoca7on of the Poet Homer is asking Muse one of the goddesses of the art to tell him the story of the Odyssey and to give him the ability to tell it to the people. o Sailing from Troy – paraphrased summaries o In Salling from Troy, a Greek hero Odysseus and his men go on a voyage back to Ithaca where they face many challenges. They fought a baUle against the Cyclops which made them lose many of their friends. o On stores of wine: it means drunk o The Lotus Eaters – paraphrased summaries o AXer the men were offshore for 2 long days they were sick and let the wind take them to a place where they could rest then they got to the coastline of the Lotus-Eaters. Luckily the Lotus doesn't harm humans, but it does try and give the people a flower that would make them never want to go home. For seven of the ten years Odysseus has spent wandering the Mediterranean Sea, he has been held cap<ve by the goddess Calypso on her island. In Book 5, Zeus sends the god Hermes to tell Calypso to release Odysseus; she helps him build a raG on which he can sail to his next des<na<on. He must sail for 20 days before landing on the island of Scheria, where he will be helped in his efforts to return home. In Books 6-8. Odysseus is welcomed by King Alcinous, who gives him a banquet in his honor. That night the king begs Odysseus to tell who he is and what has happened to him. In Book 9, “Sailing from Troy”, how does Odysseus display characteris7cs of the archetypal hero in his encounter with the Cicones? Cite support. The archetypical hero in book 9 is Odysseus because when they faced the Cicones he was willing to do anything to win the baUle even though it was very unlikely that they were going to win. It states “ My Men stood up and made a fight.” This shows how Odysseus is an archetypical hero. The Lotus Eaters (Book 10) 6. Are the Lotus Eaters harmless? What threat, if any, do the na7ves pose to Odysseus and his men? The Lotus Eaters are harmless but if they were to eat the lotus plant they would never desire to go back to their home. 7. Describe Odysseus’ ac7ons in this chapter. Make an inference: what do these ac7ons reveal about his values? Odysseus’ac7ons reveal that his values are loyalty, compassion, and self-control. 8. How does the encounter with the Lotus Eaters contrast with Odysseus’ approach to the Cicones? Why do you think this is? Explain in complete sentences. The encounter with Lotus Easters contrasts with Cicones because Lotus had a more seduc8ve tempta8on leading to its purpose, but the Cicones had a more forceful approach to geXng their victory.
