O*NET Paper William Bevans College of Humanities and Social Science: Grand Canyon University CNL-525: Career Counseling Professor Laurie Tone July 4, 2023
O*NET Paper After navigating through the My Next Move website and taking the O*NET Interest Profiler, I was able to see the benefits and concerns that were presented. Holland’s theory is one that suggest that a person’s career path can be gaged off of their personality traits many times. That approach and theory believes that career choice and career satisfaction are both identified through the personality traits and can become visible after taking the O*NET Interest Profiler. This 60-question profiler quiz gives insight as to what type of career options would be a good fit for an individual based off the answers they provide during the quiz. We will take a look at my experience with the quiz, the career options selected for me, my observation of the website and the potential difficulties that could be experienced. Names and scores of the quiz Upon completion of the quiz, I immediately received my results and all the possibilities that my profile suggests. I only scored on 4 of the possible 6 categories and only 2 of the categories tied for high scores. Artistic and Social were the two categories that I had a score of 24 while Enterprising gave me a score of 16 and Conventional gave a score of 2. Some of the careers that were recommended for me were accurate to positions I have already held, currently hold or will hold in the near future. Some of the listed careers were clergy, music teacher, marriage and family therapist, and substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor which were all from level 5 which is where I would choose from. Career options based on my results There were 5 zones that I could choose from and each level presented a different list of potential career paths I could choose from. From zone 2, the option that I already function in is
a funeral attendant. Having to work with families that have loss a loved one and are dealing with grief and not really knowing how to get through in many cases a tragedy that they were not ready for is very rewarding. In zone 4 it recommended a career as a rehabilitation counselor which is what I currently do as a PRP counselor. This position allows me to use my skillset to help people become the best versions of themselves by applying coping skills and various cognitive tools that build understanding and confidence. Lastly, in zone 5 it recommended married and family therapist which is something I plan to do and have some experience in from my clergy counseling that I have been doing over the past 15 years. Counsel and advise individuals and groups to promote optimum mental and emotional health, with an emphasis on prevention (National Center for O*NET Development, 2023). Education requirements, salary range and other career information For a Marriage and Family Therapist position, it requires a master’s degree after completing the bachelor’s degree. This career has a wide range in salary which ranges from $36k-$98k with an average of $56,500 (National Center for O*NET Development, 2023). This position per the website denotes that personality is extremely important and those individuals like helping people, teaching and talking. The personality of a person in this position would be one with concern for others, integrity, dependability, stress tolerance and self-control. Observation of website Upon observing the My Next Move website, I found it to be very helpful and resourceful. It had a lot of information that would help one to decide what type of field of work they may want to enter into. It also provided many things that an individual would need to consider upon choosing a particular career path like education needed, average salary range and personality

traits needed for that career. That website gives great detail on what to expect and how to prepare for that type of position. More importantly, it provided intel about the individual inquiring about the position or career to help them establish what things they need to qualify and succeed in that position. The site provided the My Interest Profiler which is a quiz of 60 questions that shows each individual what things they like and don’t like by categorizing their answers into 6 groups. Lastly, this site is very user friendly so even for individuals who feel that they are not computer savvy they can still navigate through this website. Would I use this site in counseling and when? I would certainly use this website in my counseling practice because I believe it is very helpful to anyone that uses it. I would especially use it with clients that are unsure of what career path they want to take. This website has over 900 career types to choose from and this would be beneficial to my clients (National Center for O*NET Development, 2023). This may very well be one of the first things I would do with a new client to better understand them in the event they are unsure of how to effectively communicate their desires. This could also be an ice breaker for clients so they not only get to share that information with me, but also find out information about themselves that they may not know. Potential difficulties when characteristics are not included Choosing a career option from the website can be good but if the characteristics of the position are not made available or the character of the individual doesn’t mesh well with the organization and staff, this could be horrible. Understanding ones most dominant personality codes or characteristics helps to better understand the individual. While data is good, it is not always fact. Characteristics usually define or feature a person or their qualities. Every person that
is qualified is not a good fit based on characteristics and its that much more difficult when those characteristics are absent. Mental wellness and career choice When the capabilities of an individual are unclear and the professional can’t properly identify what level of intelligence or competence the individual is operating on, it makes it more difficult to determine true clarity and transparency. Mental health can affect ones career choice or even how they produce, while on the other hand ones career choice can aid in mental health instabilities. Things that trigger mental health trauma can vary from person to person and usually until it is done you won’t know. Many people don’t understand the importance of vacation and resetting to ensure that they don’t have a mental overload which could come from their career choice. Lastly, some people don’t even get to work in their field of choice because of the instability of their mental health due to previous job trauma. We are able to do what we are capable of handling and it is important for us to know what that is so that we don’t overstep that line.
