For educators, it is imperative to utilize culturally responsive teaching as a means to include all students. To implement culturally responsive teaching within the educational environment, educators must first understand what culturally responsive teaching is and entails. Culturally responsive teaching is “a pedagogy that recognizes the importance of including students’ cultural
references in all aspects of learning” (Northeastern University, 2024).
Due to the multitude of cultures within our society, educators need to hone their culturally responsive teaching strategies. Thus, there are a variety of ways that educators can become more culturally responsive. One way that educators can become more culturally responsive is to create
a student-centered learning environment that focuses on the individual needs, abilities, strengths, and challenges of each student. Another way that educators can become more culturally responsive is to seek out professional development opportunities as well as reflect on how each student is supported within the educational environment.
Upon watching the presentation “Immersion,” my initial thoughts were sad. No child should be made to feel excluded, less than, or unwelcome. As educators, we are there to serve the students, to help them, and to guide them. As an educator, I would have approached that situation differently. I would have taken the opportunity to be an advocate for the students to ensure they are supported based on their individual needs.
To implement culturally responsive teaching, several practical ways can be used. Educators can encourage their students to share stories, use culturally relevant examples, and use inclusive language (American University, 2019).
While the level and ability of educators to implement culturally responsive teaching will vary from educator to educator, I would have to advise each educator to get to know each student to ensure that they feel included, welcomed, as well as seen/heard within the educational environment. Many times, students feel as though they get lost in the shuffle of the day-to-day. Taking the time to learn about each student will help to create a solid foundation for culturally responsive teaching.
Christian educators should approach culturally responsive teaching with an open heart and an open mind. It is important to follow God’s example and bestow love and kindness to those around us. Our society, communities, schools, and classrooms would not be what they are without the diversity each person brings. As stated in Romans 15:7, “Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God” (New International Version, 2011).
