Describe the relationship between the humanities and self-identity. Humanities and self-identity are connected because people can define themselves using humanities. Art, music, literature, poetry, and other forms of creative work can define someone's identity, and then the identity creates more of these works as a form of expression. Someone who enjoys any of these mediums can receive a deeper understanding of themselves through critical thinking and empathy. Literature is one way people understand themselves better. Exploring different points of view and reading about other’s experiences can lead to a deeper understanding of one’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior. This contributes to the development of a personal identity (Glaser, 2016). History, arts, and philosophy help one gain a deeper understanding of the values, beliefs, and traditions of one’s culture. Social sciences help people understand their roles and responsibilities in society which adds to their self-identity (Glaser, 2016). The humanities also encourage critical thinking skills. By questioning, interpreting, and analyzing what we see, hear, or read, we form opinions and beliefs that translate to the formation of our identity (Glaser, 2016). As we encounter other experiences and perspectives, we broaden our worldview and develop empathy which influences how we identify with ourselves and others (Glaser, 2016). 2. Describe sociocultural factors that influence identity construction. There are many sociocultural factors that impact the development of one’s identity. They help shape our behavior, values, and how we interact with others around us. Culture includes our traditions, beliefs, values, and norms that we learn from our environment. These ideals that are a part of our culture shape our view of the world and influence our identity (Rice, n.d.). For example, some Asian cultures believe that loyalty to the family is more important than personal desires. Sexuality is a part of our identity based on our orientation. How we identify determines the company we seek, how we perceive ourselves, and how others perceive us. The social class we fall into is determined by our income, education, and jobs. This also determines what opportunities we experience and how we perceive ourselves in the world. For example, someone from a lower class would see themselves as struggling to survive. Society determines our roles and responsibilities by the gender we are assigned. How we identify can impact our perception of ourselves. If a person identifies as a 3. Reading different literature genres gives us insight into how people behave and what they value. This has an impact on how we understand and relate to our identity because our exposure and experience contribute to how
we formulate our self-identity (Bond, 2021). Our knowledge of historical events helps us understand our present situation. Much of who we are and what we identify with is shaped by our past experiences. Philosophy is an areathat prompts us to examine what we believe and value and question what we see. When we have answers to these questions, we develop a sense of who we are (Bond, 2021). Music, theater, and film reflect the values of the artist. When we interpret it from our perspective, we gain insight into our identity. Anthropology is the study of human culture and how it develops and integrates into society (Bond, 2021). When we study our own cultural background, it influences how we develop norms and understand our identity. Sociology examines how our roles in our family, education, and social media impact our self-image and the roles we take on in society (Bond, 2021). It is evident that many areas within the humanities allow us to explore and understand how the world impacts our personal, cultural, and social identity. 4. Explain how diverse perspectives influence self-concept. A self-concept is how a person perceives their abilities and personality. It is influenced by many things. Societal perspectives set guidelines on what is acceptable in terms of behavior, achievement, and appearance (Glaser, 2016). For example, if society places value on academic success, those who have it will have a positive self-concept, and those who don’t will view themselves in a negative light while trying to change to conform to what is desired. Cultural perspectives also influence our self-concept. Where we come from determines our values, beliefs, and norms and shapes our view of ourselves. The values we inherit from our family dictate what is important and what one should strive to achieve. Those who conform to what their culture deems important have a positive self-concept. Those who go against the grain are often ostracized (Glaser, 2016). The media, especially social media, heavily influences our self-concept. The internet is full of unrealistic expectations and people who are idealized for their wealth and lifestyle. When people view it, they make comparisons between themselves and the images they are viewing (Glaser, 2016). Those who fall short of what is considered popular develop a negative self-image. Personal experiences also impact our self-concept. The way others see us and treat us, our successes and failures, and our socioeconomic status can all influence who we become. When our life circumstances are positive, such as good health, a career we enjoy, and financial stability, we are more apt to have high self-esteem and a positive self-concept (Glaser, 2016).
