Task 2 Community of Care
Part A-
Maria’s Family: Mom (Hispanic), Dad (African American)
Maria’s Community: Moved to a small, rural, predominately white/middle class town
Maria’s Cultural Background: Previously lived in a large, Urban city. Biracial Student
Part B-
B1)
Issue: Being Bullied for how she dresses and students taking photos of her buttocks
Action: With Maria being bullied and it being posted on the social media site, as the scenario
says her academics are beginning to struggle with her not being able to focus in class. So, for me
as a teacher, once I notice her academically falling behind or notice her being bullied I would
have a communication with her and figure out to the best of my abilities what is going on. I
would report to bullying to the proper people (admin, counselors, parents, etc.). By
communicating with Maria and with the notifying the proper people of the bullying it would
hopefully build a bridge between Maria and myself, so that she would feel comfortable and trust
me enough in the future to come to with anymore ongoing issues. If I am unable to Maria in the
situation, I would connect her with the proper school personnel to be able to help her even
more.
B1A)
The actions taken would effectively address the issue, because it would give her the sense of a safe place
without judgment, when it comes to me as a teacher and hopefully start to change her viewpoint or the
school and the community that she is new in.
It would also give Maria and I the chance to set up a time and to go back over some of the material she
may have missed or needs extra help on, so she doesn’t continue to fall behind more academically.
B2)
Family involvement would be crucial I this situation, so they are aware of what is going on and what
some of the steps may be. Even though the parents seem to think Maria is being too sensitive in the
situation, with me as the teacher reaching out and voicing concerns, that would hopefully draw some
more concern on their part. Once meeting with the parents we could discuss actions they think need to
be taken about the bullying with the school and also what actions they think need to be taken so that
Maria doesn’t continue to fall behind academically, whether that be coming in early or staying after
school to receive more help on the material covered.
Part C-
Race- White
Religion- Non-Denominational
Economic Background- Lower Middle Class
Cultural Background- Grew up in South Florida, Mixed Area
C1)
When it comes to my interaction with Maria, I would be able to relate better some what on feeling ‘out
of place’ with where they lived. Growing up in South Florida, I was a part of mixed community and
sometimes felt judged for being white, or for dressing a certain way that was ‘against the norms’ of the
majority of the population. This background of mine could create a common ground for Maria and I to
better relate to each other. Also, me coming from somewhat of a lower middle class similar to what it
seems Maria comes from would allow us to also relate better, when it comes to availability of being able
to buy clothes that allow us to ‘blend’ in easier/not stand out or have some other ‘newer’ things that the
community or students at the school have.
