Humanities notes Chapter 1
In this course, you will look through the four lenses of general education (humanities, history,
natural and applied sciences, and social science) to examine the socio-technical nature of
technology. You will see how each field of study affects technology and how technology affects
these fields. By the end of this course, you will have developed an understanding of technology
and its relationship to various social, economic, educational, and political institutions.
This class gives you the opportunity to explore a social, cultural, or global event where a
technology plays a significant role. You will submit a project, detailing and analyzing your
chosen technology. Be sure to review the guidelines and requirements for this project, which is
due in Module Seven. You will start the project early, in Module One, by selecting the event you
will analyze.
Before you explore the learning resources for this module, reflect on your own personal attitudes
and assumptions about technology. How do you use technology? What social forces are at work
when you decide to buy a new technology? Do you have a favorite technology? What
psychological or social function does the technology fulfill in your life?
What role does technology play in shaping society and vice versa?
Technology plays a significant role in shaping how society moves forward and is shaped.
We
have to acknowledge not only the technology itself but the changes it makes to pur own
perceptions.
How we use it and what effects the use has what societal impact does the use
influence.
