Southern New Hampshire University Perspectives in Humanities Professor Shipley Katrina Barclay 7-1 Project: The Statue of Liberty
1. Describe the work in detail. The Statue of Liberty is a monumental statue that resides on Liberty Island in New York City’s harbor. The colossal masterpiece stands at a total 305 feet tall made mostly out of copper that is about as thick as two pennies put together, as well as coated in gold where the flame is sculpted. The characteristics that stand out to most people are the facial features chosen to represent “lady Liberty” as well as historical Roman drapery for clothing. As well as the broken shackles used to signify new and future freedoms. 2. Describe the purpose of the work. Auguste Bartholdi, a sculptor and Edouard de Laboulaye a French Politician together proposed gifting the United States a statue that represents liberty for its centennial on behalf of France. It was meant to take old traditions and beliefs and shape them into modernized ideas and the idea of freedom for all who come. It shows a land of change and liberty. For years to come after the initial unveiling of the Statue, it served to represent our country of freedom. Standing tall for all to visit and for immigrants and refugees to first see upon entering our land. 3. Use the work to explore how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround them. As time prevails, the Statue stands strong to shine light on the country we proudly call free for all. Showing those who arrive here that they are welcomed and safe to reside within our boundaries. Also, giving the people of America something to be proud of and
fight for, allowing us to be passionate about our ideals and perspectives and exercise those in our unique ways freely. The Statue of Liberty being a permanent monument on Liberty Island gives people a constant reminder of how far we’ve come from starting our country and setting our values. 4. State questions you have after thinking deeply about this work. What more do you want to know regarding the following? 1. The relationship between culture and expression: What is the relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning? The intent of the symbolic nature of the Statue of Liberty was widely acknowledged and interpreted throughout nations other than our own. People of other countries fled to our nation in hopes of freedom and in hopes to see the statue itself. It stood as the vantage point for many immigrants that signaled they had made it to America. For 137 years the statue remains the icon of freedom for our country. However, with changes to political and social traditions, there is a question as to how long that interpretation holds. 2. Explain how your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others. My values, like others, can be swayed and shaped by many aspects whether social, environmental or political. Creations such as the Statue of Liberty give a widespread ideation and spark passion in people.

5. Explain how you would approach answering these questions: 1. What would you study about this work that might address the questions you stated? In order to address questions stated, studies into societal perspectives on the country's symbolic nature and look into ideations on current political and sociological issues. Comparing differences between patriotism in the 1800’s and present day should also be considered in a study on the lasting impression the Statue of Liberty can hold. 2. Where would you find information to address the questions? Next, draw conclusions about how the work you selected relates to the humanities: Using resource databases to find information on past events that influenced a surge of expression and patriotism among people in the 1800s can help in comparison to present day events and how the population reacts to such events. Consider the Statue of Liberty through a humanities perspective, you see more emotions and expression throughout the communities in reference to this statue. It has had a massive influential chokehold on society and their perspective of America's freedom for almost a few centuries. 6. Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created works of cultural and historical significance. 1. Describe a culture shift or event related to the work you selected. This could be a cultural shift that influenced the creation of the work, or it could be a
cultural shift that came about because of it. As many know, the Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom for all who enter and stands as the signal for immigrants coming to our land that they are near their peace. However, not many understand the events that lead up to the statue being constructed and gifted to us. After the decade-long American revolution fighting for our freedoms and rights to our land, the French took notice of our successful efforts to truly represent ourselves as a free country. In turn, they declared to give us the statue as our symbolic monument to praise our centennial celebration of being a free country. 2. Explain how a concept or resource you encountered in this course has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used. After some research and reading through the National Park Service I came to understand that the making of the Statue of Liberty was deeper than simply making a statue for us to show everyone else we were free. It was truly a gift of expression to our people that showed us we were inspiring to others, it showcased our ability to be truly free for all. 7. Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created. 1. Explain the relationship between human creative expression and the culture in which the work you selected was created using the insights you gained from studying it.
In America, human expression through art has always been a very influential aspect of our societal values and desires. In our culture we tend to gain more attention on things that give us a great sense of pride for ourselves and the work we do as individuals and as a whole country. 2. Explain how a concept or resource you encountered in this course has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used. Reading into the French’s influence on the building and concepts into the statue gave me more insight into how America truly gave other countries hope for change. Emma Lazarus created “The New Colossus”, an article for the statue in order to raise money for its pedestal, was a pinnacle event that led to the completion of the statue itself. 8. Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with in the present day (contemporary to your coursework, not the future scenario posed above). Be sure to be specific about the issues you are addressing. 1. Use the insights you gained from studying the work you selected to explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues. In the current day, if people were to use their human expressions without limitations or conditions there would create a massive wave of motivation and patriotism for everyone. Expressions through music and art are especially reaching to people of the current day and can influence them to make changes or improvements on current issues.

2. Explain how a person or concept encountered in your study of the humanities has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used. The idea that people in the past got so proud of their country is different to how people act and feel in the current day. Society isn’t as patriotic and happy to be where they are. Today, there is more inhibition to speak up and speak out and that prevents a lot of individuals from starting movements or expressing themselves. References
