What types of music were typically performed at an eighteenth-century concert? In what ways did an eighteenth-century concert differ from a modern one?
The types of music performed at an eighteenth-century concert were sacred, secular, vocal, and instrumental music. These concerts were very different from a modern
day concert. There was no main artist compared to today’s concerts and they were mostly
for the elite. They also were allowed to talk during the performance.

How did the symphony originate? Who were some of its earliest composers and where were their symphonies performed? What was the role of the Mannheim orchestra?
The symphony originated as the opening music to operas. It was first started by composers like Alessandro Scarlatti and Giovanni Sammartini. Sammartini had written symphonies for Lenten events. They were originally performed in Milan, then Vienna, and then to other cities and courts around continental Europe. The Mannheim orchestra came from Mannheim, Germany, where there were semi weekly concerts that became a way for rulers to flex their power. This orchestra was very rigid and it showed in their music with their use of dynamics and explosive openings of pieces. It would end up establishing the symphony as a standalone piece.

Describe the main sections of a typical Haydn work in sonata form.
The first section of a typical Haydn work in sonata form is always in binary ABA
form. The beginning exposition is always in the tonic key and has a main theme throughout. In the development, more themes are introduced in the dominant key. And finally, in the recapitulation, everything from the exposition comes back. 5.

Discuss Haydn’s contributions to chamber music. Why did he describe his Op. 33 string quartets as being written in “a new and special manner”? Haydn issued a set of six quartets in 1782. The “new and special manner” in question could have been many things. It could simply have been good advertising for them. There were also new textures being written in this music that could have also been called that. This new texture was that the first violin did not dominate the piece nearly as much as it does in other quartets. This led to things such as double and triple fugues making a comeback into music of this nature. This would eventually be called Viennese Classicism. A great example of this is in the second quartet of the set called “The Joke”. It explores relationships of motive with clever rearranging that doesn’t happen later but at
the beginning of the piece, which ends with a musical “joke”.
7.
What circumstances led Haydn to write the oratorio The Creation? How does Haydn represent chaos at the beginning of this work?
Haydn wrote The Creation because he heard the bigger oratorios by Handel. He represents chaos at the beginning of The Creation by every instrument playing a C in their instrument’s respective octave. This single note represents no key at all, representing the chaotic nothingness of the universe before God created it.
