Sugata Mitra's video, “Build a School in the Cloud”.
In Sugata Mitra's TED video, "Build a School in the Cloud," he advocates for a
transformative approach to education by introducing "The School in the Cloud." This innovative
concept challenges traditional teaching methods and embraces self-organized learning
environments where students collaborate and explore together, guided by big questions that
stimulate curiosity and drive independent research (TED, 2013).
I think Mitra's idea is impressive! The emphasis on removing constraints and allowing
students to delve into comprehensive and in-depth learning aligns with my own experiences in
the education system. I recall instances where my curiosity was stifled with responses like "You
don't need to know that," limiting intellectual growth. Mitra's School in the Cloud empowers
students to pursue knowledge beyond rigid curricula, fostering a genuine passion for learning
(TED, 2013). One notable advantage of Mitra's approach is its global accessibility, providing
students worldwide with opportunities for expansive learning. The removal of geographical
barriers allows even underprivileged students to engage with mentors and access a wealth of
information previously beyond their reach (TED, 2013). This democratization of education is
particularly crucial in addressing the disparities in learning resources and opportunities.
However, there are considerations to address. Mitra's proposal leaves questions
unanswered about how individualized learning paths would be structured. Not every 12-year-old
should be studying the same material, and diverse educational levels and interests should be
accommodated. The absence of a clear system for addressing this aspect raises concerns about
the practical implementation of the School in the Cloud. Therefore, while Mitra's vision is
promising, the success of such a proposal might be hindered by disparities in technological
access. As per the US Census, about 28.3% of households lack internet capabilities, potentially
leaving a significant portion of students without access to the envisioned learning environment.
Bridging this digital divide is a critical aspect for Mitra's School in the Cloud to realize its full
potential.
