Question:
The lecture talks about some films like
Top Gun
and
Days of Thunder
, teaching
lessons about teamwork and sacrifice. What film from the 1980s/90s does that, and how?
Use examples from the film you watched.
Apollo 13
is a film from the 1990s that teaches lessons about teamwork and sacrifice. The
film, released in 1995, and directed by Ron Howard, is an American space docudrama film
starring Kevin Bacon, Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Gary Sinise, and Bill Paxton. This film dramatizes
the failed Apollo 13 lunar mission of April 1970. The film tells the story of astronauts Jack
Swigert, Lovell, and Fred Haise. The three astronauts boarded Apollo 13 for America’s fifth
mission to the moon, intended to be the third lunar landing mission. However, an explosion
occurred during the journey, affecting their electrical power and oxygen supply, preventing them
from accomplishing their mission. As a result, the team had to collaborate and create mechanical
and scientific solutions to ensure the crew safely returned to Earth.
Teamwork describes a team’s collective effort to achieve a common goal. On the other
hand, sacrifice can mean a loss or giving up something for the sake of others. In this film, Gene
Kranz’s team
gave up so much to get the astronauts home safely. The team worked around the
clock for 87 hours straight on the mission control. This round the clock work, means giving up
sleep, family, and even proper meals, which in my opinion, is one of the greatest sacrifices.
This film also teaches us the lesson of teamwork through how the NASA flight controllers,
Ken Mattingly and Gene Kranz (Apollo 13 NASA Flight Director) worked together on their
primary objective, which was to get the astronauts home. In one of the scenes, Kranz states, “I
will stand behind every decision you make. We came into the room as a team and we will go out
as a team” (
Howard, 1995).
This statement shows that the director realized that a team is more
powerful than an individual and encouraged his team to work together and develop the best
solution to bring their crew back. Empowered by their director, we watch this team working
selflessly and tirelessly around the clock to invent, test, and implement ideas and solve problems
they encountered on the way to ensure the success of their mission. They looked for ways to make
the command manual incompatible filter cartridges work in the Lunar Modules and power up the
spacecraft without too much power. This team did their best as team players, given the
circumstances. Without that teamwork, the astronauts on Apollo 13 would have did. Therefore,
this film teaches the lesson on teamwork by demonstrating that collaboration and remaining
steadfast on a common objective leads to creative problem-solving and outstanding collective
performance.
