My chosen creative work is the song “Oceans,” written by Joel Houston, Matt Crocker, and Salomon Lighthelm. This song can be directly or indirectly transmitted. It can be directly transmitted through a concert by the original artist, Hillsong United, or by any other singer. It can be transmitted indirectly on the radio, CD, and digital music. I have never been to a concert by Hillsong United where this song was performed, but I have been to a church where those on stage sang this song. I have also experienced this work on the radio and through digital music on my phone. I prefer it to be direct as I am immersed in the moment. I believe there are multiple layers of meaning in this song. The first layer is the meaning the songwriters were trying to convey. The three authors of this song are Christians and believe in God. They were trying to convey a message about God. The song talks about being out in the ocean where your feet fail and your faith is without borders. They are not talking in a literal sense but in a figurative sense. The second layer of meaning comes from what I interpret from the lyrics and the emotions it stirs in me. For me, this song talks about having such faith in God that nothing compares. Thinking about being out in the middle of the ocean with nothing around me makes me think about how great God is. It makes me think about the story in the Bible where Jesus called Peter out of the boat, and he walked on water. The faith that Peter must have had to keep his eyes focused on Jesus and not sink. This stirs the desire for me to have the same kind of faith that Peter had, that amid my crazy life, I keep my eyes focused on Jesus. The third layer of the meaning of this song is the meaning it has within the Christian culture. Due to Christians being able to relate and interpret for themselves what this song means, it became popular amongst the Christian culture.
