DPM2: Historical & Cultural Influences on Best Practice Observation Table Note: You are not limited by the space below. The table will expand as you fill out each section. Video 1: Just the Facts: A Social Studies Lesson Video 2: Meeting Student Needs in Number Talks Video 3: [Insert Video Title] Level (i.e., elementary school, middle school, high school) This lesson takes place at Lafayette Elementary School in a kindergarten classroom. This lesson takes place at Enumclaw Middle School in a 6 th grade math class. The lesson takes place at Brooks College Prep Academy High School, in a social studies classroom. Setting (i.e., rural, urban, suburban) The school is in San Francisco, CA which is in an urban setting. The school is in Enumclaw, WA which is in a rural setting, The school is in Chicago, IL which is in an urban setting. Instructional topic or content of the lesson The lesson was about American facts and symbols. The students work in groups and use their resources to find facts about their symbol and present it to the class to share their findings. The lesson observed how to find where students are struggling in number talk lessons, and how to use a small group discussion to go about finding a road to the solution in which the struggling student will understand, and actively use. The lesson was about using SAC, a structured academic controversy, to engage in a civic discussion. The students are asked to work together deliberately about points A and B rather than debate them. Technology use, including examples of how technology is used in the classroom During the instructor’s lesson, the projector was used to present the power point about symbols. The students used resource books to find their facts and used markers, paper posters, and a microphone to present their The instructor uses index cards to give the initial number talk problem to the students. In the small group she uses blocks and a whiteboard to demonstrate the problems. The instructor is using premade paper presentations and markers, and the students are using their notebooks and pencils. PAGE 1

The first similarity between the three schools presented in the videos is that they’re all public schools, so they would all share similar traits in terms of what sort of students and families they’re working with. Lafayette elementary and Brooks College Prep Academy high school are both in urban areas, so their demographics and background would align with each other more than Enumclaw middle school, which is in a rural area. The second similarity between the three schools is that they all use similar technology in their lessons. The technology provided isn’t the electronic type, but they all use paper presentations, markers, and notebooks to present and plan out their discussions and speaking points. Only the second video uses an extra tool, in which the students use blocks to visualize the math problems to help their understanding. The final similarity for the three schools is that in each classroom the students work in groups to work through the lessons. This proves effective in all three scenarios, as the students discuss possible solutions, facts, or deliberation points to help them complete their assignments and prepare to share their findings. 3. Brown vs the Board of Education was one of the most influential cases in education, and by observing the classroom settings of each of the three videos, this supreme court case has had an influence on classrooms over the course of its history. Brown vs the Board of Education tackled the issue of segregation in school and paved the way to integration. At the time of its ruling, the courts deemed “segregated public schools are not “equal” and cannot be made “equal,” and that hence they are deprived of the equal protection of the laws” (1) . This ruling of segregation being unconstitutional, created the start of diverse, integrated classrooms, that can be observed in every classroom across the United States, as demonstrated by the videos from the table. 4. The kindergarten teacher in video one demonstrates the high leverage practice of “recognizing and identifying common patterns” (2) using her PowerPoint at the start of her lesson. During her portion of the lesson, she briefly discusses American symbols, and how to recognize facts and opinions while looking through resources, the students then use that practice to recognize and identify facts to use for their presentations.
