Name :Nicholas Garvin Scientific Journal Summary Article Title Effect of Clearcutting Operations on the Survival Rate of a Small Mammal Author(s) Martín A. H. Escobar, Sandra V. Uribe, Romina Chiappe, Cristián F. Estades Publish Date March 6, 2015 Publishing Journal PLoS ONE Citation Escobar MAH, Uribe SV, Chiappe R, Estades CF (2015) Effect of Clearcutting Operations on the Survival Rate of a Small Mammal. PLoS ONE 10(3): e0118883. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0118883 Introduction Summarize the key points of the Introduction. The introduction explains the practice of clearcutting in timber harvesting and its potential impact on wildlife, in Chile's Monterey pine plantations. The study focuses on understanding the survival of long haired Akodonts post clear cutting What was the goal/purpose of this study? The study was investigating what happens to long haired Akodontsafter the clearcutting of pine plantations in Chile, focusing on their survival and potential relocation to nearby refuges. What was the hypothesis of the study? The hypothesis of the study was that the survival of long haired Akodonts would be associated with the presence of nearby potential refuges. To which they could relocate after the clearcutting of pine plantations in Chile. Material and Methods Describe the study area. The study area is in Chile's coastal range, and is characterized by a mild climate. The region has gone through extreme changes, transitioning from temperate deciduous forests to mostly exotic and having Monterey pine plantations. Describe the study species. The study species are about the long haired Akodont, a native rodent in Chile and Argentina, abundant in exotic pine plantations.Mostly known for adaptability, however it is sensitive to disturbances like clearcutting, in Chile. Summarize the methods used. The study captured adult male long haired Akodonts using traps baited with oats during austral winters. Telemetry, GPS, and triangulation were utilized to watch their locations and
analyze. Results Summarize the results of this study. The study followed 67 long haired Akodonts for four years During logging, 52.4% died, mainly crushed by machinery or logs, and post logging had a 20.0% mortality rate. Survival rates dropped during logging and stayed lower afterward, on average, they were 206.4 m from the nearest refuge. Discussion Summarize the key points made in the discussion. The study found that more than 50% of adult male long-haired Akodonts died during plantation harvesting due to machinery and log-related injuries. These rodents tend to hide instead of fleeing during logging, making them more vulnerable. The findings show the importance of understanding species specific responses. Was the hypothesis supported? Explain. No, the hypothesis was not supported. The study telled us that the survival of long haired Akodonts would be associated with the presence of nearby refuges to which they could relocate after clear cutting. However, the findings indicate that the refugees did not increase the chances of individual Akodonts surviving. What areas did they identify as future needs of study? Something to identify as a future need of study is the need for a larger body of information to utilize the effects of forest management on wildlife at both local and landscape scales. Paper Analysis- Readers Opinion What is one way they could have improved the methods? I think one improvement in the methods could have been a longer follow up period after logging operations to handle the additional mortality that might occur in the weeks following the initial observations. Review the figures used in the study, are they all easy to follow and supporting the paper? Explain Yes the figures in the study are easy to follow and supports the information on the study. It shows us the supporting evidence that more than 50% of adult male long-haired Akodonts died during plantation harvesting due to machinery and log related injuries.
Overall, do you think this is a well- done study? Explain. Yes, I believe it's a well done study, the researchers carefully studied how logging affects the survival of long haired Akodonts and supported it with multiple pieces of evidence. Do you think that the results supported the discussion? Why or why not? Yes, the results supported the discussion. The study's findings, indicating a significant mortality rate for long haired Akodonts during logging operations, align with the points discussed about the challenges these rodents face during clearcutting. If you were a graduate student in this lab and were responsible for continuing this research. What would you do? Explain your basic ideas and experiment you would perform. If I were a student continuing this research, I'd want to study the animals for a longer time, look at different types of places they live, compare how different ways of cutting trees affect them, and see how many animals are impacted
