Gibbs 1 Reflection 4: Native American People Chapter 3 discusses the historical context of the settlement of the San Luis Valley during the years of American rule. It shows the interactions between Ute leaders and U.S. officials in the mid-19 th century and how they conducted negotiations and agreements. It also focuses on how Ute leaders engaged in diplomatic relations with the U.S. and the complexities of peace and violence between the two. The chapter also discusses the challenges the Ute faced in maintaining peace and conflicts between other indigenous groups like the Arapahos and Cheyennes. Lastly, the chapter talks about the impact of U.S. policies on the Ute the eventual breakdown of diplomacy, and the rise of violence between the two. One of the main points in the chapter was the U.S. negotiations with the indigenous peoples and how the negotiations involved more than linguistic differences but also the commitment to non-violence. Another main point was how the Ute’s policy of neutrality was very beneficial and helped them maintain control over their homeland. Another broad main point throughout the chapter was the Ute's failure to realize how comprehensive American prohibitions on Indian attacks against white migrants or residents in New Mexico were. This in turn led to conflict between the U.S. and the Ute which ended with significant losses for Ute communities. The three biggest points in the chapter would be negotiations and assurances, challenges for maintaining peace, and the transition from violence to diplomacy. The chapter highlights the negotiations between the Ute and the U.S. and their sought assurances from American authorities for their communities' needs. The chapter also discusses the many challenges Ute leaders had to face while trying to maintain neutrality while also dealing with economic issues. It also touched on how U.S. policies affected the Ute communities. Lastly, the chapter shows the shift in Ute's strategy from what was a historically violent past to a commitment to peace and diplomacy. It
Gibbs 2 also shows how Ute leaders ultimately chose peace which led to newfound relations between the Ute and the U.S. One bit of information that struck me as interesting in this chapter was the account of Muchace leader Tierra Blanco and his raids on the Arkansas River on Christmas Eve in 1854. The chapter recounts how Blanco and his 100 warriors killed twenty people and took three captives at El Pueblo. I found this part very interesting since it was conducted on Christmas Eve. I believe that is why the attack was so successful and impactful since it was such a large attack and unpredictable. I believe this chapter relates to what we are learning in class by showing the power dynamic between the indigenous people, in this case, the Ute, and the U.S. It showed how negotiations were handled and how indigenous groups navigated through an ever-expanding American nation-state. It also relates to our class with the impact of U.S. policies on the Indigenous peoples. This includes territorial boundaries, promises of support, or lack thereof, and expectations of behavior. Some other things I am learning from this chapter that relate to race and ethnic relations as a whole were the economic pressures and resource conflicts between the Ute and the U.S. These struggles provide us with an understanding of how socio-economic factors influence race and ethnic relations. Another thing would be the shift from violence to diplomacy. Not only does it show the true impact of U.S. policies on indigenous people, but it also shows how they adapted to these changing circumstances which proves their agency and resilience.
