2 Week 1: Observation Notes & KWL Know What you know about the child based solely on the observation? Example: The child chose the blocks 3 times and dolls zero times. The child said, “I do not like dolls, they are for girls.” Want to Know What more do you want to know about the child, especially to help educate the child? Example: I want to know more about the child’s preferences for toys and why they feel as they do. Learned What did you learn about the child based on the observation? Example: I learned that the child has ideas about gender and preferences related to gender. Video Observation: Why Does the Rock Fall from the Cup Know What you know about the child based solely on the observation? Want to Know What more do you want to know about the child, especially to help educate the child? Learned What did you learn about the child based on the observation? 1. The child got visibly frustrated when he couldn’t get the cup from under his leg 1. I want to know if the child can hold the cup properly 1. I learned that the child preferred what object he wanted to hold the rock in 2. The child kept going for the same rock and trying to place it in the cup 2. I want to know why the child kept using the small cup instead of the basket 2. The child kept trying to build a ramp with red blocks Why does the child continue to look to the teacher for confirmation? When the child couldn’t build a ramp for the car to go down, he would try a different way

I learned that the child preferred to play with blocks and cars Reflection The use of a KWL was beneficial for me to learn about the child’s development and to organize my thoughts because I was able to lay it out in a chart form. I am a visual learner so I need to have all the facts and all my questions in front of me to see with my own eyes. With the KWL I was able to place my thoughts on what I know and what I want to learn in work form. When I did this process, it brought more questions to my mind. KWL charts can be used for lesson plans for students or communication with parents because it helps you observe and assess the situation at hand. You can place your observations in chart form with what you know what you want to learn and what you want to know, and it will be easy to read. You can then communicate these items to the parents and have documentation. These charts provide you with a starting point for your lesson plan. It allows you to take what you have and place it in a lesson plan that coordinates with the piles for development.
