What is the name of the Land on which you are currently living or studying? What are the traditional boundaries of the land? (20-40 words) 2.a) Briefly outline 2 local or regional organisations which are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Community led that provide services for children/young people and Country or Place, which refer to the traditional lands of the First Australians, are fundamental to the wellbeing of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Country or Place means more than just rock, soil and minerals: there is a strong connection to traditional lands due to spiritual beliefs about how the land was created and the presence of many ancestors in the landscape, the sky, the waterways and the
families. Add details and a summary of what each service provides. (30-50 words for each) b) Briefly outline 2 local events that you could attend that would develop your understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples’, histories and Cultures. Provide the weblink or reference to the service and events provided. (20-50 words) Table 1- Question 2 a) Australia for Native Tile and Reconciliation (ANTAR) ANTAR's Purpose is "To engage, educate and mobilise a broad community movement to advocate for justice, rights and respect for Australia's First Peoples." ANTaR has been working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and leaders on rights and reconciliation issues since 1997. ANTaR is an independent, national network of organisations and individuals working in support of Justice, Rights and Respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. ANTaR is an independent non-government organisation and is non-party political. b) Reconciliation Australia Reconciliation Australia was established in 2001 and is the lead body on reconciliation in the nation. We are an independent not-for-profit organisation which promotes and facilitates reconciliation by building relationships, respect and trust between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our ambition is to enable all Australians to contribute to the reconciliation of the nation. b) 1. NAIDOC WEEK. - NAIDOC Week (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee) occurs annually in July, and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians all over the country and overseas. Participating in an Acknowledgement of Country is an effective way of helping students develop awareness and respect for the ongoing relationship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (the traditional custodians) have with their land. The practice can be done by anyone, at any time. 2.International day of the world’s Indigenous people-It’s a day to reflect on the challenges Indigenous people face all over the world and to take steps toward promoting and protecting their rights. The event recognizes and honours their achievements, and it's also

It is critical though that the information is credible and completely based on facts. Information should be up to-date , from a trustworthy organisation , by a trust worthy author and by relevant to the local areas . For questions 3-5, access Reconciliation Australia- Acknowledgement of Country and Welcome to Country , Reconciliation Australia- What is reconciliation? and Who has a RAP? ; to help with your response (50-100 words each question). 2. a) Explain what a ‘Welcome to Country’ is. b) Who can deliver a Welcome to Country? c) Describe an event or time when a Welcome to Country would be delivered in a service or school. Table 2- Question 3 a) Welcome to country is a ceremony performed by aboriginal or Torres strait islander people to welcome visitors to their traditional land. It can take many forms, depending on the culture of the traditional owners. It may include dancing, singing, smoking ceremonies or speech in traditional language or English. b) Welcome to Country is delivered by Traditional Owners, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have been given permission from Traditional Owners, to welcome visitors to their Country. c) Welcome to Country occurs at the beginning of a formal event and can take many forms including singing, dancing, smoking ceremonies, and/or a speech. 3. a) Explain what an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’. b) Who can offer an Acknowledgement of Country? c) Describe a time when an Acknowledgement might be offered at a school or service. a) An acknowledgement of country is a way of showing awareness of and respect for the traditional aboriginal or Torres strait islander owners of the land or which a meeting or event is being held and of recognising the connection of Aboriginal and Torres strait island people to the country. An acknowledgment of country can be informal or formal and involves visitors acknowledging the Aboriginal or Torres islander owners of the land as well as the long and continuing relationship between indigenous people and that country. b) An Acknowledgement of Country can be offered by any person and like a Welcome to Country, is given at the beginning of a meeting, speech or event.There is no specific wording for an Acknowledgement of Country, just be sincere and , if possible , do some research on the country you are acknowledging c) An Acknowledgement of Country is usually offered at the commencement of a formal event, meeting, speech or school assembly as an opportunity to acknowledge, and pay respect, to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. All department of education staff are encouraged to demonstrate appropriate acknowledgement of the ongoing custodians of country at any forum -from general office meetings (including videoconference and teleconference meetings)to formal gatherings ,functions, events and ceremonies . 4. After reading through Reconciliation Australia- What is reconciliation? and Who has a RAP? ; a) briefly describe, in your own words, the term ‘reconciliation’ b) outline the ‘ 5 dimensions of reconciliation’ c) outline the purpose and significance of Reconciliation Action Plans. Table 4- Question 5 a) Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.Reconciliation means acknowledging Aborginal and Torres Strait Isalnder people as the First people of this land and recognising that these people were dispossessed , presecuted and oppresses as a result of colonisation in Australia.Reconciliation Australia’s landmark report, The State of Reconciliation in Australia ,describes five dimensions of reconciliation. These dimensions are interrelated. \
b) 1. Race relations- All Australians understand and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non- Indigenous cultures, rights and experiences, which results in stronger relationships based on trust and respect and that are free of racism. 2.Unity- An Australian society that values and recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritage as a proud part of a shared national identity. 3.Equality and Equity- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples participate equally in a range of life opportunities and the unique rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are recognised and upheld. 4. Historical acceptance-All Australians understand and accept the wrongs of the past and their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australia makes amends for past policies and practices ensures these wrongs are never repeated. 5. Institutional Integrity- The active support of reconciliation by the nation's political, business and community structures. c) RAP supports us to collaborate and share knowledge, skills, and expertise to build strong relationships with First Nations Peoples and communities and assists us to create a culturally safe organisation. A Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) program provides a framework for organizations to be inclusive in their work and contribute to national reconciliation.
