2-1 Discussion: The Issue of Race Race is a powerful and contentious topic in today's society. How does anthropology, as a discipline, define race? Explain why it is difficult to use biological characteristics to categorize people into races. Explain your rationale. Write a post of 1 to 2 paragraphs. In response to your peers, either agree or disagree with their answers on race and biology. Anthropologists approach race through two different concepts, the scientific and culturally constructed concept of race. The scientific concept refers,” …to a population, or group of populations within a species that has measurable, defining biological characteristics.” “Culturally constructed concept of race, in which cultural ideologies and dynamics are linked with morphological traits (things like skin pigmentation, body shape, or cranial structure) to create an artificial, ‘biologized.” Concept. Since all humans have 100% of the genes and share 99.9% of the same variants within those genes thus there is no single gene that indicates race. The context of the word race varies depending on the individual asking or answering. Historically the word has only been used to divide us and raise and lower groups of people in society.
