Introduce yourself to the class. Explain your background and what you hope to gain from this course. Imagine you were going to do anthropological research. What would you choose to study and why? Would you choose to work alone or on a team? Hello Class, I am what Myers Briggs would refer to as IE but leaning slightly to the I side. For those unfamiliar with this personality scale the I is for introvert and the E is for extrovert. I find it fairly accurate so if I were suddenly to have a middle-aged career change, I would continue to find work doing something where I worked alone for 50-75% of the time. The remaining time would be used for collaboration. With the limited knowledge I have obtained thus far from the readings on the different subfields of Anthropology, I think I would gravitate toward Archaeology. I enjoy learning about history especially when it is further back than 250 years ago. I recently finished watching Marco Polo on Netflix which I found entertaining but also peeked my educational interest to learn more about him and the Mongols. This has led me down the internet rabbit hole. A few times each week I feel a connection to archaeology when I am excavating my cat, Puddin’s litter box, especially when she has eaten
anything else other than the food, I’ve provided her with. I don’t quite get that feeling however with my dog, Boomer who will be 18 years old in a few months. I have two children, Audrey, and Andrew, 17 and 16 respectively who are the highlight of my life. When they were young, I encouraged them to be outside as often as possible and to explore their surroundings which often led us to dig holes in the backyard looking for some special artifact or creature with their junior Archaeology and specimen collection kit. I am a nature lover who can camp alone for days and keep myself occupied in the woods until responsibility drags me back into society. I am a Human Resource coordinator for a university in Maryland that has a large and diverse student and faculty base. In this line of work, I come across people from many different cultures, and I am hoping this course provides me with some additional perspective to apply in my current line of work. Looking forward to the next 8 weeks, Michele Reply 1 Mia: Hello Mia, Thanks for sharing a peek into your life. Sounds like you must have a very busy life. Your plans for your future are noble and inspiring. I can certainly see how Cultural Anthropology would aid in these goals. Having the tools to understand those with different cultural backgrounds is a true asset to helping those with either addiction or who have been victims of rape and abuse since all these cross over into every culture and unfortunately, seem to have no boundaries. Having the knowledge and understanding of what cultural background the individual has could guide the steps in the treatment and recovery of those suffering from mental and physical trauma.
Best of luck in your pursuits, Michele
