Philosophy of Teaching Statement Samantha McMurray Rasmussen University EC295/EEC2935 Section 02 Summative Project for Early Childhood Education Monica Stukes 08/08/23
As an Early Childhood Educator, it is important to keep the parent in the know so they can prepare the child for what they learn in the classroom. For diverse families it is important to make them feel welcomed. It is also important to learn their language and some of their likes and dislikes. I feel like learning things about them will help build a positive lasting relationship which will help their child or children with building positive relationships as well. I always try to be positive and friendly. I am also a good listener. Being consistent with communication is also very crucial to advocating for families. All these traits will help build positive relationships not only with diverse families and children but everyone in my community as well. Observation and assessment procedures can be used to evaluate and positively influence child development because these practices help us as Educators learn what the children like and dislike. These assessments help us learn the child’s strengths and weaknesses. We also learn each child’s individual learning style. We can also develop lesson plans based on the children’s needs. Observation and assessment techniques are the base of everything we do as educators. We learn so much when we take the time to observe children. These observation and assessment practices help us see how children interact with each other and in a variety of situations. When it comes to helping children learn better strategies for behavior, we need to understand their stage of development. Young children are constantly learning and gaining new information and skills. Of course, this does not happen instantly. We have a responsibility to guide their behavior positively. One positive guidance behavior technique is to encourage the child often and generously. Socially you can encourage positive interactions by demonstrating mutual respect towards them and others. Another technique is to point out positive behavior. Always let them know when they do the right thing. Another technique is to set realistic expectations for the children. I believe all these
techniques will be effective because they will build strong positive relationships with the child at home and in school. And stick with them throughout their adult life. They are also developmentally appropriate because it is important to build positive relationships with younger children because they are learning new things every day. Culturally responsive teaching promotes the success of all students equally. Creating inclusive, diverse environments and learning spaces for children brings many positive results, such as developing a positive self-image, forming friendships, developing social skills, and learning to respect each other. When we think about educating children, we need to consider how they will function as adults. We want to support them in treating others with dignity and respect. Designing a curriculum that includes every child is a hart task but an important one because again it is all about making the child comfortable in all surroundings, not just at home. When young children start school, especially if they are an only child, they may not have any idea of how to share with others and communicate with other children. Children that speak other languages at home need to also feel comfortable learning in school as well. Children with disabilities whether it be a physical or developmental disability deserve to be equally included as well. I am disabled myself and in school I did not get to participate in many activities or extracurricular activities because they were not safe or easily accessible for me being physically disabled. It is important to have high quality Early Childhood Education programs because when young children start school it is a whole new experience for them being outside their home and the comfort zones of their parents. These programs are their start to learning how to become a respectful and responsible adult. They also learn about diverse cultures they may not ever learn from at home. The children also learn to build positive relationships with everyone not just their family members they see daily.

Early childhood educators also know of the importance of having secure attachments with adults and caregivers in their lives. When children feel secure, they can explore, learn, and feel safe in the environments they find themselves in. When children do not create secure attachments, this can cause them to make poor choices and become in a difficult situation and environment. These children can develop anxiety and depression and can become withdrawn and anti-social. The quality of early childhood education is important for the holistic development of children. Quality includes proper curriculum and learning environments in all developmental domains (physical, intellectual, language, social, and emotional).
