ATH 111 Cultural Anthropology 3-2 Journal Samantha Roe
The video that I chose for this journal is Would You Eat It? 10 Weird Foods We Dare You to Try. I had a hard time watching this whole video. Cultural Norms and Values – The cultural norms that I saw in this video were the delicacies themselves, the cultural norms have been around for centuries and have gained in popularity around the world, people are even doing YouTube video about who can finish a can Surstromming without throwing up Surstromming is a type of raw fish put into a can and while in the can it starts to ferment and continues to ferment until it turns into a soupy nasty soup like stuff with the half dissolved remains of the fish in it. Cultural Comparison- This cultural norm is so different from my cultural norms because we do not eat a lot of fermented foods on this side of the globe. I was raised to eat fish but not fermented fish, in my culture we would consider that dangerous because Surstromming contains species of Halanaerobium bacteria which is what causes this delicacy to ripen in the can. Cultural Relativism- In this video Would you eat it? 10 Weird Foods We Dare You to Try. I practiced cultural relativism in my journal by not judging other cultures because they eat weird
food. Just because it is not common in my culture does not mean I will not associate with other who eat these kinds of food because it is part of there culture, and it would not be right for me to not associate with them because of something that is apart of there culture. I would not want someone judging me because I eat or believe in something different from them. Application to Film Study- I can apply what I have learned to my video Mulan because in their Chinese Culture the women must do what they are told and maintain the house and take care of the men. In the movie Mulan the girls were matched with men, the women were not allowed to pick who they wanted to be with, and they were not allowed to join the army. Though in my culture it is both men and women who run a household and there is not one that takes care of another we take care of each other. Another affrication is that women have rights and can join the military. So even though our cultural backgrounds and norms are different we can still co-exist together and be respectful of other cultural backgrounds.
