Michael Overland What do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of ethnography compared with survey research? Which provides more accurate data? Might one be better for finding questions, while the other is better for finding answers? Or does it depends on the context of research? Ethnography is a much stronger means of data collection because it specifically allows the researcher to be present with their subjects. It extends over longer periods of time and allows the researcher to have firsthand interactions and experiences with the groups being studied. Survey research is very superficial in that its data is mostly quantitative and not qualitative like ethnography. Because of the qualitative data that is obtained through ethnography, the data will be more thorough and accurate than survey research. Ethnography by nature forces the anthropologist to ask questions. According to the text we see that ethnographic field work has stages. Prework must be done where the anthropologist studies the people and community that they are about to embark on. Then in the field the researcher will get to know the people and community by living and working with them. This is where they will ask the question they have predetermined, then finally, they can adjust more questioning based on the answers and experiences that they have. I believe that no matter the context of anthropological research being done, ethnography is always a more valuable and more encompassing method to use.
