3.1 Educators should embed information about First Nations’ cultures and opportunities to learn about cultural differences into service routines and practices. Inclusion of First Nations history, current situations and future aspirations means learners can see themselves, their identities and their cultures reflected in the learning curriculum. The principles of equity, inclusion and diversity, as described in the National Quality Framework, require that children’s culture be taken into account when planning the curriculum. Learning opportunities should be supported by appropriate cultural protocols, and address the requirements of the approved learning framework and the curriculum. Select three strategies or learning activities that could be embedded into routines and learning activities to help children understand first Nations cultures. You will have to use your own initiative and understanding to expand on any strategies you select from the text, to explain what they would cover and how they would be helpful. Consider the strategies in the context of routines that would be relevant in the learning environment. Alternatively, you can develop and describe three different activities or experiences (not in the text) that you believe will be consistent with cultural protocols, the approved learning framework and the curriculum. 1. daily children's meetings and at the start use an acknowledgment of country, encouraging children to run and do the acknowledgment is also more desired. 2. invite community members into the service to share stories and educate the children 3. running activities with children about the seasons described and understood by First Nations people, this can then also be turned into a display to keep in the service. 3.2 List six ways of promoting children’s understanding of Indigenous peoples’ cultures and languages. You can list some of the examples in the text or develop your own ideas and examples.
Find out who the Traditional Custodians of your area are, and the language they speak Find out what land or nations your families may have connections with Provide opportunities for families to identify with the Aboriginal culture in your care environment Form links with your local Aboriginal community Find out what relevant community events are celebrated in your local area and get involved Share dreaming stories with children as a valuable, creative and fun way to talk about culture Set up a native or bush tucker garden – use native herbs in playdough, cooking or for sensory play Engage local artists in the community to share their skills e.g. weaving or painting Visual arts experiences such as making and painting with ochre – include Aboriginal art techniques such as cross-hatching and dot- painting Adopt the practice of yarning circles with children and educators sitting in a circle inside or out on land to talk, listen or share stories and ideas Movement experiences could involve learning of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal dance movements, or kids could create new movements by mimicking Australian animals. 3.3.a Educators can promote children’s understanding of First Nations peoples’ cultures and languages through collaboration with others in culturally safe and sensitive ways. This implies that educators will, themselves, demonstrate cultural competence and create a culturally safe environment. In a paragraph explain why it is necessary for educators to develop cultural competence? A short summary is all that is required. it is important for educators to become culturally compentent to ensure that they aren't sharing and pushing and prejudice and unconscious bias views that could have negative impacts on the children they are educating. ensuring cultural competence in educators allows for them to create a safe environment for indigenous children and have ample opportunity to educate non- indigenous children on the appropriate interactions and culture, values, history and language.
3.3.b What is cultural safety, why is it important when promoting children’s understanding of First Nations peoples’ cultures and languages, and how is it achieved? cultural safety Is ensuring that those who are classified as a minority or a cultural background that isn't the dominant cultural background in the current environment still feels supported and safe.
