In this recorded presentation from 2015, how many species of insects does Marlene Zuk say are in the world? (1 point) At least one million maybe even 10 million there are new insects being discovered every day so it is hard to tell exactly how many 2. What does Zuk list as two reasons that we need insects? (1 point) 1 of every 3 bites of food we have is made possible by a pollinator. Use them to make fundamental discoveries form the structure our nervous system and DNA 3. What does Zuk mean when she says that male insects compete after mating? (1 point) She means that they compete with their sperm to remove other sperm from previous insects the female has mated with 4. Why are male katydids “choosy” when selecting females to mate with? (1 point) They transfer sperm and give the female a gift, and they have to produce this that is very heavy and hard to produce so they are very selective. 5. How does the male katydid’s mating behavior affect the female’s mating behavior? (1 point) The females want as many of these gifts as they can get so they are more aggressive and competitive to be able to mate more than the males would. 6. What sex are worker ants and bees? (1 point) Male 7. What are model systems and the idea behind them, as defined by Zuk? (2 points) Model systems stand ins for all other animals including humans what the norm is for most animals 8. In what way can model systems be taken too far and why is this a problem, according to Zuk? (2 points)
Use males as they are the model system the way they are supposed to be and using females as the variant, females aren’t the focus and causes us to miss out on how nature is.
