W11 Applying Anthropology: Religious Culture Identify the following in LDS culture and church structure. Be sure to give comprehensive explanations and examples. 1. Three rites of passage Usually a few months after a child is born this child receives a blessing in church from the father and his name is announced. Children usually by the age of 8 are able to receive baptism and confirmation that makes them officially become members of the church. There are also rites in the temple, people over 18 years old, men and women are allowed to enter all parts of the temple to be able to do temple work for deceased people. 2. Supernatural forces One way that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints see supernatural forces could be said What it is Through the powers of the priesthood This priesthood has been conferred at different stages throughout the lives of men when they were young people receiving the aaronic priesthood and the powers of this are limited but when they became adults they were able to receive the priesthood of melchizedek that gives them all the powers of the priesthood to be used in their life and with their family these powers are not tangible but faith of the members of the church makes it have a special power of spiritual and physical healing.(Religion and Magic, textbook pg.345) 3. Supernatural beings In this aspect as members of the church, we are very familiar with supernatural beings very often we testify that we have direct contact with supernatural beings. For example when we seek help from God through the Holy Ghost that it is a supernatural beings, we also believe in angels as well as the angel who He appeared before jose smith and who guided him to begin with the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 4. Cohesion and support Something very important about the culture and the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that many times their cultural and social base makes them have an emotional cohesion and a spiritual support to the other members of the church and with other religions or cultures. When cultures come together to work with everyone and they try to connect and build relationships with each other this makes them even more strong and this makes a way that they can use to help each other to grow.(Religion: Continuity and Change, Textbook pg.359)
