1. What is my research question and approach? a. What cooking techniques were used in ancient China and have they influenced the methods we use today? b. I am going to read through my sources on chinese cuisine throughout the centuries and then read “China to Chinatown : Chinese Food in the West” to make connections between Chinese cuisine and western Culture and depict those findings. 2. List at least 5 resources(MLA) that I will be using & a 2-5 sentence summary a. Chang, Kwang-chih, editor. Food in Chinese Culture : Anthropological and Historical Perspectives. Yale University Press, 1977. i. This source covers the more anthropological perspective on Chinese food. This source is exactly what I am looking for as it covers the anthropologic perspective on chinese integration into the modern world. b. Cheung, Sidney C. H, and David Y. H Wu. The Globalization of Chinese Food. Routledge, 2004. i. This source delves into the globalization of chinese food and it may mention modern incorporations of chinese food traditions. THis will be very helpful for my assignment as I am trying to find that link between ancient chinese culture and modern western culture. c. Roberts, J. A. G. China to Chinatown : Chinese Food in the West. Reaktion, 2002. i. This source covers the west’s interaction with chinese cuisine and culture. THis source will help me determine possible methods of transfer of foods from chinese culture to modern western culture.
d. Pu, Muzhou. Daily Life in Ancient China. Cambridge University Press, 2018. i. This source goes into the historical and cultural context of ancient Chine. This source has potential to help me because it has potential to mention cooking habits of the time and it gives me context behind the daily practices and habits of ancient Chinese people. e. Swislocki, Mark. Culinary Nostalgia : Regional Food Culture and the Urban Experience in Shanghai. Stanford University Press, 2020. i. This source explores the significance that Chinese citizens attach to their cultural foods. This source also goes into the Western food influence in Shaghai and its urban scene. This source will be very useful to me because it goes into the significance of connecting the past and present through Chinese cuisine in Shanghai so ti will talk about those ancient food techniques used in China. f. Rawson, Jessica. Life and Afterlife in Ancient China. Penguin Books, 2023. i. This source explores the history of China through the discovery of ancient tombs. This source has potential to explain the uses of old pottery/cooking utensils/vessels so I can link those explorations to modern cooking tools.
