Class goals Gain: (1) An understanding of the basic tenets of the science of animal behavior, across taxa and contexts (2) An understanding of comparative scientific methods and how they are used to systematically investigate the evolution of behavior (3) The ability to formulate and evaluate scientifically testable hypotheses about the evolution and physiology of behavior (4) The ability to evaluate the challenges that global climate change presents for animal populations, and understand how to account for animal behaviors to make informed conservation decisions. In addition to these objectives, we will hone scientific literacy and communication skills (that are necessary for any career)!
Syllabus Our guide to learning together Includes academic dishonesty Read it, and review it (it may change!) Participating in class o We are all unique and will learn from each other (so please share your perspective) It’s okay to be unique in your opinion o Tips for speaking up? o How I would like you to participate (raise hand)
Students’ Time aka Office Hours Do not hesitate to email us to set up a meeting- sometimes a 10 minute meeting is all it takes to clarify a concept! Other topics we can chat about: Study tips, test- taking tips, graduate school, careers, getting research experience! o Resources on campus: Accessible Education Services, Walter Center for Career Achievement, Counseling and Psychological Services, Writing Tutorial Services

Late extra credit will not be accepted. Extra credit is worth 5 points each (i.e., maximum extra credit = 10 points). •Attend a talk/lecture pre-approved by an instructor and write a one-page summary of how the talk pertained to animal behavior. •Find a current (meaning within the last 2 months) popular journalism piece (i.e., something from the New York Times, NPR, etc.) on animal behavior. Read it and the original journal article and write a one-page summary of how well the popular article captured the original research publication. •Read a peer-reviewed animal behavior related journal article (get the article pre-approved by an instructor). Provide a short summary (2 3 paragraphs) and 5 critical questions/critiques you have about the research. In addition, extra credit opportunities may be offered on exams, assignments, and in class at the instructor s discretion. Be on the lookout and take advantage of these opportunities! They add up and may make the difference in your letter grade by the end of the semester.
