6-1 Discussion: Religion For this assignment, reflect on your reading from Anthropology: Asking Questions About Human Origins, Diversity, and Culture: Part IV, Chapters 15 (sections 1, 2, 4, and 5) and 17. In your initial post, choose one of these questions to answer: According to the reading, what is a totem? Give an example of a totem from your culture and explain how it functions as a totem. When an anthropologist talks about magic, what do they mean? Give an example of this kind of magic in the United States today and explain how it is similar to magic in non-Western societies. According to the reading, what are the key features of a ritual? Give an example of a ritual you are familiar with and describe whether or not you think it meets this definition of a ritual. In response to your peers, discuss whether you agree or disagree with their statements. Do you have a different insight than the one they provided? If so, explain what you see as different and why. Use examples to justify your answer. Cite your sources in APA format. Rituals are performances that have specific key features such as stylization and repetitiveness. Rituals typically involve a symbol and a have set orders of times, words, and actions (Welsch, 2019). A ritual I am familiar with is the rite of passage ritual of marriage, which I believe does meet the requirements of a ritual. Traditional catholic vows are specific spoken words performed alongside the exchange of rings, which are a symbol. The marriage ceremony typically has a specific order of events, such as walking down the aisle, exchange of vows, exchange of rings, first kiss, and then celebration. In the catholic religion, the
totems of communion, bread and wine, are also often inserted into the vow ceremony and specific songs are played during the marriage ceremony. Welsch, R. (2019). Anthropology (2nd ed.).
