Report
Lab 4 Report Introduction The purpose of this lab is to observe the static and kinetic friction forces. I will use the coins and rubbery object to observe the friction and tried to find relationship between normal force and respective coefficients of friction. Procedure and data analysis Activity 1 & 2 In this activity I will set up my ruler vertically so that I can calculate the angle that coin starts to slip by using trigonometry. Starting from the top left picture to right, it indicates quarter, dime, nickel, and rubber, respectively. The screenshots were the frame that coins and rubbery objects just before slips. All 4 of them stated at 0.508m. For quarter, it had height of 0.097m. I can use F k = u k - *m*g*cos(theta) to find u k value.
Activity 3. In this activity, I will try to find the acceleration of a coin sliding down a ramp for quarter. I lifted up the poster board slightly larger than the one that caused it to slip. Position (m) Time (s) 0.508 0 0.483 0.1 0.455 0.2 0.439 0.3 0.406 0.4 0.345 0.5 0.305 0.6 0.246 0.7 0.203 0.8 0.178 0.9 0.127 1.0 0.102 1.1 0.071 1.2 0.043 1.3 0.0 1.4
By above line regression, we could know that ‘a’ value is 0.000622. Activity 4. In this activity, I drew a free body diagram of the coin for activity 3. Above at activity 3, the each red line indicates gravitational force, normal force, and frictional force. Activity 5. In this activity, I repeated Activity 3 and 4 for the other coins. I used dime and nickel for this activity. Starting from top left to right, they are showing dime 1 st frame, last frame, nickel 1 st frame and last frame, respectively.

Conclusion After finishing this lab, I could understand the relationship between normal force, static and kinetic friction forces. Specifically, static friction force gives the maximum possible force. On the other hand, kinetic friction force gives the force opposing the relative slipping motion between the object and the surface.
