Instructions

Objective (2 points)
In your own words, what was the purpose of this lab? Consider what you are testing and
observing/measuring.
The purpose of this lab was to measure if the diver will sink or float depending on how much
pressure is being applied to the bottle.
Hypothesis (1 point)
Write your hypothesis in the if/then format shown in the procedures. (
Example: If the pressure
increases, then the diver will sink/float)
If the pressure increases, then the diver will sink
Independent Variable (1 point)
The independent variable is the factor that you manipulate/change during an experiment.
Independent variable: The amount of pressure being applied to the bottle
Dependent Variable (1 point)
The dependent variable is what changes as a result of the independent variable. Therefore, the
dependent variable is what you measure and observe during an experiment.
Dependent variable: The diver

Lab Procedure (6 points)
Write a step-by-step procedure for this experiment. If doing the hands-on version, include pictures and
details about the type of Cartesian diver you made. If doing the alternative version, write a step-by-step
procedure for making the Cartesian diver and collecting the data as shown in the pictures.
Number your steps and use complete sentences. You may add more steps if necessary.
1.
The First step was to record the starting position of the diver which was 3cm.
2.
The next step was to apply slight pressure to the bottle and record the effect on the diver that
the pressure will cause, the diver now sank to 11cm.
3.
Third step was to apply more pressure, with more pressure the diver sank even more and it is
now at 21 cm.
Data (6 points)
Complete the data table as you complete your experiment or by using the alternative provided.
Pressure Applied
Cartesian Diver Observations:
Describe what occurs to the
Cartesian diver at each step.
Depth of Cartesian Diver
in centimeters (cm)
None
The diver floats
3cm
Small increase
The diver starts to sink
11 cm
Large increase
The diver has completely sank
21 cm
Conclusion (12 points)
Please answer the following questions using complete sentences.
1.
Was your hypothesis supported by your observations? Explain why.
Yes, my hypothesis was correct. The more pressure applied to the bottle, the more the diver will sink.
2.
If you had completed the procedure of this lab, what possible experimental errors could have
occurred?
Possible experimental errors could’ve been measuring the diver incorrectly causing faulty
measurements.

3.
You observed the effect of pressure on the buoyancy of the Cartesian diver. What is a
different variable that you could change the next time you repeat this experiment and that
might also affect the buoyancy of the diver?
A variable that could change the next time one may repeat the experiment that might also affect
buoyancy of the diver could be the liquid inside of the bottle.
4.
How does this experiment relate to what you've learned about submersible technology such
as submarines and ROVs?
This relates to such submersible technology because it proves that the pressure of the water does
have an effect on the buoyancy of an object.
