PROBLEM 1
Last week I used a stopwatch to measure the echo time of my snare drum in the hall
outside my classroom, which is 80 meters long. The average echo time was 10
milliseconds. Use your understanding of the Echo Ranging formula to prove or disprove
my findings, remember this echo was heard in air. If you disprove the findings, explain
your findings. Disproves because, d=c/t t=d/c d=80(2) c=347 t=0.519
Part II:
1.
If distance decreases and velocity remains unchanged, what happens to the
time? Time would decrease
2.
If velocity increases and time remains unchanged, what happens to the
distance? Distance would increase
3.
If velocity decreases and distance remains unchanged, what happens to the
time? Time would increase
4.
if time increases and distance remains unchanged, what happens to the
velocity? Velocity would decrease
PROBLEM 2
This portion of the lab will explore propagation and its relationship to media
characteristics. (i.e.density, elasticity, compressibility, and bulk modulus). The two
mediums below propagate particles differently. Which of the two medium would have
higher acoustic velocity and create better propagation or movement of particles?
Medium 2
MEDIUM 1 - water balloons
1. What are the characteristics of this medium? compressible, elastic
2. What would happen to your hand when holding water balloon after the balloon was
struck with a hammer? (assume it does not break) It would jiggle and the water would
move around
3. Is this medium good for energy propagation, prove it through supporting references.
(pg number) No, 56/57 page says that elasticity will take more time to gain
acceleration.
MEDIUM 2 - hard baseballs
1. What are the characteristics of this medium? Low elasticity, low compressibility
2. What would happen to your hand when holding a baseball after being struck with a
hammer? Did you feel more pressure when compared to the water balloon? Why? My
hand would move because there's more force than when the water balloon was struck
due to varying compressibility. The baseball has lower compressibility so there's more
force.
3. Is this medium good for energy propagation, prove it through supporting references.
Yes, page 56/57 says that there is a higher wave propagation with high bulk modulus.
Part II
1.
If the stiffness of the medium increases and the time remains unchanged,
what happens to the distance? Distance would increase
2.
If the compressibility of the medium decreases and distance remains
unchanged, what happens to the time? Time would decrease
3.
If the bulk modulus decreases and all other factors remain the same, what
happens to the velocity? Velocity would decrease
4.
If the density decreases and all other factors remain the same, what happens
to the velocity? Velocity would decrease
5.
If stiffness decreases and time decreases, what happens to the distance?
Distance would decrease
