Chapter 8 Lab Questions FMGT 4310 –
Winter 2024 Case 1 Fernandes and Associates Chartered Professional Accountants is a successful mid-tier accounting firm with a large range of clients across Canada. During 2023, Fernandes and Associates gained a new client, Ultimate CCTV Inc., which manufactures and sells surveillance cameras and equipment. The year-end for Ultimate CCTV is June 30. You are a senior auditor working on the Ultimate CCTV engagement for 2023 and have been asked to test the sales commission expense using substantive analytical procedures. The five products they sell are as follows and the commission rates differ depending on the product sold. - Ultimate Reg License Plate Capture Cameras (3% commission) - Ultimate Black & White Nightvision Cameras (3% commission) - Ultimate Weatherproof Color Cameras (2% commission) - Ultimate Pan/Tilt/Zoom Cameras (2% commission) - Ultimate Vandal Resistant Black & White Dome Cameras (1% commission) Required: Explain how you would use substantive analytical procedures to audit the Commission Expense for this client. Explain each step in the 8-step process as it relates to this client.
Case 2 The following items are documented in the audit working papers: 1.
Sales transaction included in the year ended December 31, 2023, but evidence from the cut-off procedure suggests that the sale should be dated January 2, 2024 ($1,250,000). 2.
Warranty expenses in the trial balance for the year ended December 31, 2023, total $150,000; the provision for warranty claims as at December 31, 2022, was $100,000. Evaluation of correspondence suggests that an additional $200,000 in warranty claims could result from ongoing disputes with customers. No provision for these claims has been made. Management has made a warranty provision for 2023 of $120,000. 3.
Severance expenses related to reorganization of head office administration were charged to rent expenses ($578,920). 4.
Management has not recorded an impairment for assets. A drought-induced recession has hurt property values in regional cities where seven branch offices are located. Total land and buildings in the trial balance is $5.5 million. Required: Evaluate each item above and explain whether each item is an error or a judgemental misstatement. What specific action and/or correction would you recommend to the client? # Error / Judgmental Explanation Recommended Action 1 2 3 4

Question 2
You are an analyst for a financial services firm that was engaged one month ago to conduct sensitivity
analysis on a new project for a client. Fortunately, the client is an alum of the University of Melbourne
and has asked that the approach taught in Corporate Financial Decision Making be used. The project
involves a contract with a high quality and low risk customer who has guaranteed that they will pay $60
per unit of the product to your client at the end of each of each of the eight years of the project's life. The
only uncertainty your client faces is how many units their customer will purchase (as determined by the
quality of your item relative to competitors) and the variable cost per unit your client faces in producing
the product – with most of that variable cost being taken up by the cost of labour. You collect the
following information.

The audit team included a manager who owns 1% of the ALB’s shares. The executive partner believes that the 1% is too small and it will not affect the manager experience.
Your firm offered this client a bookkeeping service for this year.
One of the audit team received a high salary offer to be appointed in the client’s internal audit department as a head of department.
The finance director was recently working as an auditor in your audit firm.
ALB plc intends to increase its capital by issuing more shares in the stock market and the financial manager is asking your firm to manage this process.

Chapter 1Managerial Accounting: An OverviewEthics and the ManagerRichmond, Inc., operates a chain of 44 department stores. Two years ago, the board of directors of Richmond approved a large-scale remodelling of its stores to attract a more upscale clientele. Before finalizing these plans, two stores were remodelled as a test. Linda Perlman, assistant controller, was asked to oversee the financial reporting for these test stores, and she and other management personnel were offered bonuses based on the sales growth and profitability of these stores. While completing the financial reports, Perlman discovered a sizable inventory of outdated goods that should have been discounted for sale or returned to the manufacturer. She discussed the situation with her management colleagues; the consensus was to ignore reporting this inventory as obsolete because reporting it would diminish the financial results and their bonuses.Required:1.
