Team Mascot Analysis Scottsdale Community College “Fighting Artichoke” —Mascot Approval Assertions 1. Selection Process: The Artichokes moniker was chosen by students in 1972 to embarrass leadership when school administrators asked for students' input. 2. Form: The Artichoke is a jolly green giant round like the veggie with wild cartoon eyes and a smart-aleck grin. Students, alumni, and the community embraced Artie commonly referred to the school as ‘Artichoke Nation’ and athletic teams as the ‘Fighting Artichokes. 3. Prohibitions: This school mascot does not show any discriminatory, vulgar, offensive, or sexualized aspects. Artie does not represent sexist or racist stereotypes or names or must not promote the use of drugs or alcohol. Evidence 1. University documents attesting to the elections and votes in 1972 that were done to come up with the name and thus select the name. 2. Photos of the mascot costume, testimony from students regarding the significance of the mascot form and historical nature of the mascot. 3. Photos of individuals of various races/genders chosen to play the mascot, testimony of from university personnel and mascot accounting to the facts that the mascot is never portrayed with alcohol or drugs. Included documentation of this being against school policy (if such policy exists). Investigation What documentation truly exists regarding this vote, did students truly vote for this mascot and where is that evidence? Need to know the nature of the mascot itself, interviews must be done with student body and university faculty regarding the history of the mascot, and how it has become a historical figure. Need to find policy in place regarding the appearance of the mascot with alcohol and drug use, more specifically, the prohibition of such. Also, the use of individuals from various racial backgrounds and genders representing the mascot must be seen too.
Team Mascot Analysis Assessment This university should prevail because it can meet two of the three elements. 1. Selection: This mascot was adopted in an acceptable manner by most votes coming from the student body. 2. Form: This mascot is not a historical figure but has become one over time, but mascot is not an animal, or a mythical creature. 3. Prohibitions: The Artie mascot does not demonstrate any prohibited aspects, which include sexist or racist stereotypes, names, or promotes the use of drugs or alcohol. Dartmouth University “Kerry the Keg” —Mascot Approval Assertions 1. Selection Process: Dartmouth University conducted a student poll in spring 2003 to decide upon a new mascot after dropping the Indian mascot. The moose came in first in this poll, but ultimately, "no mascot" was chosen. However, students at the Jack-O- Lantern humor magazine expressed interest in creating a mascot that wasn't racist, biased, or sexist, leading to the creation of Kerry the Keg (Keggy). 2. Form: Keggy is described as an anthropomorphic keg, representing the beer-swilling Animal House fraternity culture, a notable Dartmouth stereotype. 3. Prohibitions: Keggy was specifically created to avoid racism, bias, or sexism, indicating an intention to adhere to the prohibitions outlined in the statute. Evidence
Team Mascot Analysis 1. Documentation from student body endorsing Keggy following the student poll in 2003. 2. Photos of the mascot form of Keggy, testimony from the student body regarding the historical significance of his form. 3. Photos of various students within the student body representing his form (if they have), testimony from university officials regarding his form, and potential policies in place that prohibit the mascot from promoting drugs/alcohol while in costume. Investigation What did students say or express about the creation of Keggy as a potential mascot? Understanding how students feel about the new mascot and how they came up with a mascot that was not racist, biased, or sexist like the old one. Did students have any debates regarding the mascot. Need to know how Keggy was designed and demonstrated to everyone by the humor magazine. Why was there not a poll about the new Keggy creation? Assessment Dartmouth University should prevail because it can meet all three elements. 1. Selection: Selection was made by the student body in an acceptable manner. This is shown in the initial vote the students were dissatisfied with the Moose Mascot and made the decision to not have a mascot. Following this the student body president personally endorsed Keggy as their Mascot. 2. Form: Keggy would not be considered a historical figure, but Keggy has become an ingrained part of Dartmouth culture over time. Keggy would not fit the traditional mold of mythology and has no roots in cultural narratives but has achieved a legendary status within the context of Dartmouth College. Keggy is an anthropomorphic keg that represents "the most obvious Dartmouth stereotype: the beer-swilling Animal House fraternity culture and has since appeared at a range of campus events. 3. Prohibitions: Keggy does not perpetuate racist or sexist stereotypes or names and symbolizes a playful nature along with reflecting Dartmouth’s culture in a lighthearted way. On the other end, Keggy humorously embodies the beer-drinking stereotype associated with Dartmouth’s fraternity scene. As lighthearted as this can be, the university mascot representing the behavior can have negative connotations as alcohol use is being promoted. Team Mascot Analysis Assertions 1. Selection Process: The public historically black university that is Mississippi Valley State University. The purpose of its creation was to draw in African American candidates and lessen the pressure on them to integrate into universities that are exclusively for white students. The reason for the rename was educational disparity. Due to the mascot's perpetuation of gender stereotypes, many have voiced their disapproval of the men's and women's team names, saying that they sound more like bands than university sports teams. 2. Form: The mascots, Delta Devils and Devilettes, represent the men's and women's teams, respectively, at Mississippi Valley State University. However, there might be debate about whether the names, especially "Devilettes," align with modern sensibilities or perpetuate gender stereotypes. 3. Prohibitions: Opposed using mascots or team names that are considered offensive or perpetuate gender stereotypes. Evidence 1. Documentation or reports regarding the establishment of the mascots Delta Devils and Devilettes, by Mississippi Valley State University. Testimonies or statements from university officials or stakeholders involved in the decision-making process. 2. Visual representations or descriptions of the mascots, showcasing their appearances and attire. Statements or articles discussing the origins or rationale behind the names of the mascots. 3. Statements or policies from the university addressing concerns about racial or gender stereotypes perpetuated by the mascots' names. Testimonies or records demonstrating the mascots' portrayal in alignment with these prohibitions. Investigation Does the mascot align with the University's inclusivity especially because of the criticism regarding gender stereotypes, need to know how they produced these names. What were some of the actions taken when they created these names, what were the votes between administrators or students, where is the evidence of any votes or debates about this matter, need to know the rules regarding discrimination, how will the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) rid of monikers and what would be the process, any other information regarding how this decision came to be. How did individuals agree?
Team Mascot Analysis Assessment The Mississippi Valley State University may not prevail because it does not meet all three elements. They likely meet only the Prohibitions element. 1. Selection: The selection process was not clear and additional information is needed to determine if it was created using an acceptable manner or if a vote of the student body was used. Universities typically use students and faculty in this process, but more evidence is needed as this is unclear. 2. Form: Delta Devils” & “Devilettes would not be considered a historical figure but have left their mark in the University’s history. Delta Devils” & “Devilettes would not be considered mythical figures, but rather symbols associated with Mississippi Valley States athletic teams. While not mythical, the Delta Devils” & “Devilettes evoke a sense of strength and determination along with the history of the school. 3. Prohibitions: Delta Devils” & “Devilettes do not inherently demonstrate racist or sexist stereotypes or names. However, it’s important to recognize that interpretations can vary, and some people may perceive this differently. For example, at Mississippi Valley State, the men's teams are known as the Delta Devils. The women's squads are saddled with the Devilettes, which sound more like the backup singers for a 1950s rock 'n' roll band than a group of intercollegiate athletes in today's world.
