Introduction

The purpose of presenting a picture lineup to a witness is two-fold. The first reason is that you do not want to persuade the witness in any way to choose a certain person as the perpetrator of a crime; rather, you want the witness to be completely unbiased. The second reason is that you want to ensure that once the subject is identified, he or she is the real subject and not someone who is innocent.
