Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

When 100 mL of 0.06 M Mg(NO3)2 is added to 50 mL of 0.06 M Na2C2O4 solution.

The result of the reaction has to be given.

Concept introduction:

The solubility product (Ksp): Solubility product is defined as the concentration of the dissolved ion’s rise to the power of its stoichiometric coefficients in an equilibrium condition.

Consider a general reaction:

    MnXm(s)nMm+(aq)+mXn(aq)

The solubility product is expressed as follows:

    Ksp=[Mm+]n[Xn]m

Here

Solubility product = Ksp,

Explanation of Solution

Given,

100 mL (or) 0.1 L of 0.06 M Mg(NO3)2 is added to 50 mL (or) 0.05 L of 0.06 M Na2C2O4. Ksp of MgC2O4(s) is 8.6×105.

Reason for the correct option.

The dissociation of MgC2O4(s) is given below,

    MgC2O4(s)Mg2++C2O42-

The Qsp value is calculated as follows,

        Qsp=[Mg2+][C2O42-]

The ions present in the solution is calculated as follows,

    [Mg2+]ionsinsolutions=0.06M×0.1L0.1L+0.050L[Mg2+]ionsinsolutions=0.04M

  [C2O42-]ionsinsolutions=0.06M×0.050L0.1L+0.050L[C2O42-]ionsinsolutions=0.02M

The Qsp value is given below,

  Qsp=[Mg2+][C2O42-]Qsp=[0.04M][0.02M]Qsp=8.0×10-4M

Qsp value is greater than the Ksp of MgC2O4(s), therefore, precipitation will be form and the reactant will be there in the solutions.

When comparing the Mg2+ ions and C2O42- ions in solution, the number of ions of Mg2+ is more in solution.

Hence, option (b) precipitation will form and Mg2+ ions remain in solution is correct answer.

Reason for the incorrect option:

According to the calculation, the rest of the options (a), (c) and (d) are wrong answer.
