Chapter DY, Problem 9PQ
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Based on the given data, the order for the given reaction has to be found.  The tabulated data given is:

  CH3Cl(g)+H2O(g)CH3OH(g)+HCl(g)

    Initial Concentrations, M;InitialRates,M.s-1-------------------------------------------------------Exp        CH3Cl       H2O      Rate1             0.100        0.100     0.1822             0.200        0.200     1.453             0.200        0.400     5.81

Concept Introduction:

Rate of a reaction:

Speed at which the chemical reaction happens is known as rate of a reaction.  Slower the speed of the reaction, lower will be the rate.  Concentration, temperature, pressure, catalyst are the factors affecting rate of a reaction.

Rate law – it is a relationship between reaction rates and reactant concentrations

Order of a reaction:

Order of a reaction is the power of the rate on the concentration of each reactant.  Order of a reaction is an experimentally determined one.

Explanation of Solution

Reason for correct option:

The given reaction is:

    CH3Cl(g)+H2O(g)CH3OH(g)+HCl(g).

Rate of the reaction is:

    r=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y.

From the table,

    r1=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.100]x[0.100]y=0.182(1)r2=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.200]x[0.200]y=1.45(2)r3=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.200]x[0.400]y=5.81(3).

Divide the equation (3) by equation (2),

    r2=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.200]x[0.200]y=1.45-------(2)r3=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.200]x[0.400]y=5.81-------(3)r3/r2=k[0.200]x[0.400]y/k[0.200]x[0.200]y=5.81/1.45=4.00=22y=2.

Order is 2 with respect to H2O.

Divide the equation (2) by equation (1),

    r2=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.200]x[0.200]y=1.45-------(2)r1=k[CH3Cl]x[H2O]y=k[0.100]x[0.100]y=0.182-------(1)r2/r1=k[0.200]x[0.200]y/k[0.100]x[0.100]y=1.45/0.182=8.00r2/r1=[2]x[2]y=8r2/r1=[2]x[2]2=8r2/r1=[2]x=2x=1.

Therefore the order of the reaction is 1 with respect to CH3Cl.

Hence the option (B) is correct.

Reason for incorrect option:

From the above expression, it is clear that the order of the reaction is 1 with respect to CH3Cl and 2 with respect to H2O.

Hence the options (A), (C) and (D) are incorrect.
