Chapter 9.5, Problem 9CC

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To predict the major products for the given alkyne reaction and transformations should be identified.

Concept Introduction:

Hydrogenation:  The hydrogenation is a reduction reaction which results in an addition of hydrogen. Several organic compounds (alkenes, alkynes) is hydrogenated, it becomes more saturated.

Hydrogen reduction reaction: The alkenes or alkynes can be reduced to alkanes with H2 in the presence of metal catalyst (Pd, Pt, Ni) . The new C-H σ bonds are formed simultaneously from H atoms absorbed into the metal surface.

Platinum reduction reaction: The alkenes can be reduced to alkanes with H2 in the presence of metal catalyst (Pt) . The two new C-H σ bonds are formed simultaneously from H atoms absorbed into the metal surface. This type of reaction stereospecific giving only the cis (syn) addition product.

The acid-base chemistry of both EDTA and EBT are important to ensuring that the reactions proceed as desired, thus the pH is controlled using a buffer. What percent of the EBT indicator will be in the desired HIn2- state at pH = 10.5. pKa1 = 6.2 and pKa2 = 11.6 of EBT
What does the phrase 'fit for purpose' mean in relation to analytical chemistry? Please provide examples too.
